Re: D'lite 6L6 build: Bright!
Larry, could you expand on what you said there. I'm not getting what you are saying. Are you saying the higher voltage ceramics sound darker than a ceramic of the same value but lower voltage rating? Correct! The higher the voltage rating, the bigger the Xc (capacity reactance) usually is, what you...

Re: D'lite 6L6 build: Bright!
Another cause for the overly brightness of an amp might be the tubes! Chinese Shuguang and JJ's are more on the brighter side, while NOS Tungsram, Mullard or RFT (in this order) do darken an amp's sound. A RFT ECC83 as V2 and a Telefunken smooth plate ECC83 as V3 might be the trick!? Concerning the ...

Re: D'lite 6L6 build: Bright!
Lastly, I recall Brandon having a problem with an overly bright amp that turned out to be the brand of PS capacitors. Apparently Nichicon is not nearly as smooth and warm as F&T, Sprague, or Xicon. Another smooth axial filter cap is the light blue BC, formerly Philips and still made on the Philips ...

Re: arcking from 6L6 between pin 3 to pin 4
I am getting arcking between pins 3 and 4 when I power up. Any ideas as to why this wouols happen. Are you shure, that the arcing not occurs between pin 2 & pin 3? I've never seen yet arcing from 3->4, but uncounted times from 3->2 This happens with a speaker mismatch 1-2 steps upwards or w/o a spe...

Re: Biasing the 1ohm resistor way.
How much does the screen current affect the bias current reading across the 1 ohm resistor? This differs a lot from tube to tube, between types and also between brands of the same type - impossible to say something in general! Just a few examples from my measurements: 100W OT w/ Zpp = 1.75K; Screen...

Re: Siemens EL34s
At the beginning, listen for the high pitched squeal. That would be a Tungsram 12AX7 that I bought off a member on this forum at a premium, which was guaranteed to be low in microphonics. When I inquired about the excessive microphonics problem, I was given a link to purchase a tube damper from the...

Re: Dave Funk's Tube Amp School
Myself I'd buy the line filter and not worry about the cord, but there isn't a lot of science behind that decision. As far as RF in a Trainwreck goes, on omission in the Express/Liverpool power supply is snubber caps across the rectifier diodes, this is a source of RF in the power supply. Many peop...

Re: VVR Install Problems
I may be all wet but I believe the 2m2 are depicted incorrectly in the schematic in the above post. No! The PPIMV mod in Bil's schem is drafted absolutely correct! Both the 2.2M are 'safety resistors', which currently apply bias voltage to the output grids for the case, that a pot's wiper fails, so...

Re: VVR Install Problems
As I've already said above, I still don't have any experience with the VVR or similar circuits and I never saw any instructions, how to install... ... but if in an amp w/ fixed bias by installing the VVR the bias voltage first is taken off the bias circuit above the trim pot/resistor and then fed in...
