Re: Liverpool Output Transformer Selection

... I went ahead and ordered Pacific... If you don't mind me asking, where did you order your Pacific iron? I used Pacific iron for my Express build, which I got from Allyn, but as far as I've heard, all of Allyn's new Pacific order is spoken for already, and I'm ready to start my own 'pool build. ...

Re: Quick speaker question

solderstain and anyone else, from the scumnico guy himself: Surfsup, Saw your TGP post, but figured it was easier to email you rather than update a 2 year old thread. You’ll want the 65w model for that amp since you’d push the 30w too hard and likely fry the voice coil. Hope that helps! Jim is cert...

Re: Quick speaker question

Depends on WHICH 25w speaker, of course. I take a big-picture view of it - Speaker manufacturers like Celestion, for example, design in a safety margin. A 25w speaker isn't going to crap out the instant you pump 26w into it. You'd have pump significantly more into a speaker, continuously, over time,...

Re: Fender Bassman 50 with Master Volume

Here is a shot of my 1966 (AB165 circuit, with earlier version circuit label affixed to inside of head cab). I changed it to AA864 / AB165 hybrid. I did exactly the same thing to my '66 Bassman a few years ago based on the info in that same link. KILLER! I also made both channels into 'Normal' chan...

Re: 5Y3 versus 5AR4

Well, I hooked up the Variac and dialed up a steady 120 VAC and took some measurements - I've got 390 VDC on the plates of the 6V6s... I didn't know what to really expect for voltage since I didn't remember what the Gibson PT was putting out. I was curious if I was going to be close to the 360 VDC r...

Re: 5Y3 versus 5AR4

Another option is to use what you have got and insert a series flameproof power resistor after the rectifier, which will drop the voltage and introduce more sag, then you make it switchable so you have both options available Thanks for the suggestion. Anyone who has seen any of my builds knows I'm ...

Re: 5Y3 versus 5AR4

...the 5V4) have a much lower voltage drop... I like me some 5V4 for the right situation. It's what's saving my '63 AC30/TB... or more correctly, the old tubes I have in that amp. My wall voltage can get as high as 127 VAC during low demand periods during the day, and that can jack the B+ up...

Re: 5Y3 versus 5AR4

Thanks, guys - this is getting more interesting as people post. :D I fired the amp up on the bench last night with generic 12AX7s up front, a pair of JJ 6V6GTs, and a Chinese 5AR4, just to hear it make some noise. I ran it through an open-back cab with an old G12-65, and a closed-back cab with a 196...

5Y3 versus 5AR4

As a departure from my recently-completed Express, I'm putting the finishing touches on a 5E3-type build into an old Gibson GA-10 (don't worry, the GA-10 had been gutted a long time ago...). The only original Gibson parts in the build are the bare steel chassis, the Gibson PT, pilot light and power ...

Re: Taming noise in Liverpool build

I just took a good read through this for the first time, and am a little confused by what the OP is dealing with. Maybe he can clear up my confusion? Initially the question is about hiss... and later you talk about interference your guitar picks up and the phenomenon reducing when the amp is p...

Truly inspired work. Very spartan. Can we encourage you to post one more gut shot that shows the entire chassis. I would love to see the full scheme. cheers A Fair enough - the next time I pull it out of the cabinet (which may be over the weekend), I'll see if I can get a good quality shot. Stay tu...

Re: Variations On A Theme - Express content

Thanks for the nice words. I don't know if I 'improved' the Wreck design so much as adapted it a little bit. :) As far as the signal path is concerned, it's still true to the path (except the Cut control). Since I've had this complete and pretty-much finalized my tube choices, it's been hard to forc...

Recommend change to Wreck BOMS - pilot light source

There's a much easier source for the pilot light for our beloved Wrecks - Mouser. Since we order a buncha stuff from there anyway, we can get our pilot light from there too, rather than the source in the current BOMs...
