Re: Where to find Trainwreck Logos?

What variables in the circuit? The amps are almost identical circuit wise. Like you said, almost identical circuit wise. Variables such as, resistor/capacitor additions/value variations, transformer variants, pot values/tapers, presence circuit variations, filtering, tubes and various layout and ma...

Re: Where to find Trainwreck Logos?

There is mojo to those amps, but it doesn't reside in the badge. You must lay them out correctly and most likely have to tweak the wiring to get the goods out of it, particularly, the tone stack wiring. The wires from the tone control caps is almost directly wired to the pots. I would have thought ...

Re: Where to find Trainwreck Logos?

I agree that Kens amps had an abundance of mojo. All that I have heard have been fine sounding amps but a few really stand out to me as what I look for in a Trainwreck. They may not be the examples that are others favorites. Ken built amps for many individuals with the intention of it being an amp ...

Re: Trainwreck Champ ? (Dirty Little Monster)

Has anyone seen the AX-84 single ended amps. They sounded pretty good too. Don’t think it’s worth trying to chase down the DLM amp.

Re: New F&T 100uf 350v caps: Tip Of The Week

Mark, there is data showing that ceramic caps produce measurable distortion, depending on the dielectric type. In some cases it’s very little, comparable to mica, and in others it’s significant. It just struck me as funny when you said the difference is always exactly as you expect. I perceive that...

Re: New F&T 100uf 350v caps: Tip Of The Week

...I do hear a difference between ceramic and silver mica caps and the difference is always the same. I don’t know why they sound different, but they do sound different, the silver mica seems to let more signal through. Confirmation bias, anyone? ;^) Hi Martin, I also respect your opinion and knowl...

Sigh. Fair enough, I know you have mentioned this sort of thing time and time again. I do have great respect for your work and your opinions, but I do hear a difference between ceramic and silver mica caps and the difference is always the same. I don’t know why they sound different, but they do sou...

Re: New F&T 100uf 350v caps: Tip Of The Week

I like measurements. They help me quantify what I experience. I wish I had that spectrum analyzer R.G. had, that function of my Rigol scope is limited. I agree anything real can be measured. Maybe not with the gear and process available to all of us, but it can help identify and filter out the vari...

Re: New F&T 100uf 350v caps: Tip Of The Week

Well, I don’t doubt it’s hard to quantify what is going on with the components. I have yet to find someone prove to me that different resistors sound different. I’m not saying it’s not possible, I haven’t heard it. I have heard the difference between silver mica and ceramic caps and it’s quite disti...

Re: New Astron caps?!?

Anyone can buy (or steal) the rights to a brand name, and start producing product with the branding and look of the original (in this case being produced by "Shin-ei, LLC" perhaps another purchased brand name, lol.) Call me cynical, but I propose that if they look really good it'd be hard to object...

Re: Electrolytic caps and measuring them?

Did you happen to compare your pre- and post-replacement bias voltages/cathode currents? I'd bet you altered the bias setting when you changed the caps. I checked out the bias today and it was much as muchness. I found the EL-34’s were conducting less and the 6L6’s were conducting more. So it’s a b...

Re: Mesa Boogie Simuclass bias?

What I was looking for was the blue to brown resistance, and the blue/white to brown/white resistance. Are you able to check the primary to secondary voltage ratios? eg if a measured low V AC is applied to the 4ohm secondary, what V AC is produced across blue to brown, and blue/white to brown/white...

Re: Electrolytic caps and measuring them?

Those Vishay are noticeably upper midrange forward sounding , good for Marshall crunch , lots of harmonics . I really like that brand for the bias specifically. How did you determine that Charlie? I had issues with the highs in my Mesa Boogie SOB which I converted to a Mark 1. The fix was to get ri...

I like their electrolytic caps . Time will tell how they survive .
I haven’t used the electro caps. I tried to get them from CE Distribution and they had run out of stock.
What do Jupiter electro’s bring to the circuit?
