Re: bias test points
.5W's can also act as a handy fuse if you get a short in a power tube. Back when I started tinkering, my first project was to restore an old Fisher stereo, all the old hi-fi guys strongly recommended 1/4 watt 10 ohm resistors between the 7868's cathodes and ground, iirc, for this reason. Funny that ...

Re: 6AU6 vs. EF86?
Thank you , Johnhenry. After further research, I have found references to the 6AU6 being terrible for audio and also maybe needing DC filaments to avoid excessive hum. I think I'm just going to bite the bullet and order a couple EF86's but I'll find a use for all those 6AU6's one day... that gain of...

Would this work? Valvestate bridge rectifier?
Hey everyone, just curious, it would be a little absurd to use 3 rectifier tubes in any amp, but for the sake of discussion, is there any reason this wouldn't work? I assume you would want indirectly heated cathode tubes like EZ81's or 6X4's...? I've seen schematics that show half-tube-half-ss bridg...

6AU6 vs. EF86?
6AU6's are incredibly cheap and easy to find in many an old radio, I have about 8 or 10 in my stash right now, all of which I came across by accident, versus 0 EF86's I've been able to find, so... Does anyone have experiences with these? I am embarking on an 18watt-ish amp that will have one 6AU6 ch...

Re: question about ef86 front end preamp
I haven't found data sheets for EF86 that give the handy little chart for different resistor values and levels of gain, but looking at the 6AU6 mini-pentode chart, which is probably similar to en EF86's, you see that it is very easy to get gain from 100 on up to 300! Compare that with the other high...

Regarding the cab comments - I have hooked my blackface style clone up to the speaker in my big Marshall style 18 watt cab and it sounded amazing, I eventually bought a Sammi to replace the speaker in my 18, put the speaker that was in the 18 in my bf amp (basically a Princeton) and the result was r...

Re: Tube sockets?
I've had a problem with the Beltons, in that they tend to wick solder down into the socket area when I'm working on the pins. Even if I move very quickly it still happens sometimes. I don't have this issue with any other tube socket brands, just the Beltons. My work-around is to put a tube in the s...

Are you talking about using a remote cutoff pentode like an EF183?

Re: The End of 18Watt.com
+1 on that. Caught me pretty off-gaurd I have to say, but I learned an immeasurable amount of stuff from the good folks on that site, also got some killer bargains on great gear from other members. I understand how the site outgrew its original goal, would be nice if it grew into something bigger ra...

Dumble Homepage?
Hey everyone, nice to meet you!
I've been looking around the net and I can't seem to find a homepage for Dumble Amps, is it too exclusive a company that the models aren't to be trodden out before just anybody or am I just looking in the wrong places?
Anybody got a link?
Thanks!

Re: Modified Deluxe questions for beginner
Well a presence control is usually a by-product of a negative feedback loop and the 5E3 doesn't have a negative feedback loop, you could add one but it would really change the character of the amp, it might also be a bit more complicated to implement in the cathodyne phase inverter that the 5E3 uses...
