Re: Fender Super 60 Red Knob Diagnosis (Blowing Fuses)
The schematic indicates F4 may not be present on all versions.Matt D wrote:Thanks for the reply. It is blowing F1, the 2.5A fuse on the mains and the only one accessible from outside the amp.
In which case the mains fuse would blow if any of those diodes shorted.
(typical diode failure mode is a short)

Re: Bassman AA165
Unmolested AB165.
The circled resistors are usually the first targets for modding.
Mine also has the AB165 circuit with AA165 tube chart.
Both front and back plates are "FMI".

Is the blowing fuse "F4", the HT fuse ?
I'd be looking first at the bridge rectifier, and then the flyback snubber diodes (on the power tube plates).

Re: What do you think he is using?
Their current rider calls for "JCM800, 50 watt preferred".
Not the same band members now, some died some quit, only one original member.
But it may still be an effort to nail the original tone.
I did see them back in the day, great band.

Re: Organs make great donors
I have picked up many amps out of tube type organs for cheap and they are excellent for conversion to guitar/musical instrument or stereo. The power transformers tend to be overkill for the application, they sometimes offer 2 choices for B+, 5, 6, and 12-volt heaters. the ones I have gotten were us...

Re: electrolytic measures good, acts bad?
Is it possible for an electrolytic to measure good but break down under high voltage? I have one that measures good, but when I inserted it in the circuit, i had a small lightning storm inside the 5U4. I took it out of the circuit and all was well. It comes after a pretty stiff inductor, and it's o...

Re: Do we have any cigar smokers here?
I used to like the Rough-Cut Mountaineers but haven't seen them anywhere in a long time. After that Backwoods (just like the Rough-Cuts) the normal ones not the silly flavoured ones. I had a chance to smoke a real Cuban when in the Bahamas, wow what a game changer that was. Haven't smoked any cigars...

Re: speaker power handling
Looking to buy a 2x12 cabinet to be powered at different times, by 2 different amps. 1st amp is mesa boogie mk2 B, 75 watts 2nd amp is line 6 flextone HD, 300 watts I've heard that underpowering speakers can wreck them. Is this the case? Presently, the boogie has a 200 watt EVM which has had no pro...

Re: Triode TW - Express Kit Build
Plenty of amp designs use the chassis as a return for various supply voltages. One example, the Champ, has the filaments returned through the chassis. The first change I normally hear suggested when someone mods a Champ is to 'float' or balance the filament supply to eliminate the filament current p...

Re: Triode TW - Express Kit Build
You're correct, Paul. It depends on the grounding scheme. If you have multiple ground points to the chassis, the chassis itself is tying them together, and then it is part of the circuit. In my understanding of grounding design philosophy, no current AC or DC flows though the chassis. This can be a...

Works. Better than works. IS AMAZING. Zero hum. Huge, HUGE sound. Thank God I put in the PPIMV master. Won't have an opportunity to play loud until late tomorrow. But, WOW, simply awesome at bedroom volume. Success, Kudos ! 400v on plates. The Bright switch and tone stack is great. As spec'd in TW ...

Re: active versus passive
Any strong feelings about active versus passive tone controls? Beyond the greater insertion loss of the passive? Is passive commonly found because of economies or is there a sonic reason I'm unaware of? I haven't found an article that really clearly spells it out, just kind of a wishy-washy noncomm...
