I need to resupply my resistors so far ive checked out allied, I was thinking id buy the ohmite 1watt CF, they seem reasonable priced, anybody use these and what do you think? what other sources should i check out befor ordering the ohmite from allied? mark Hi, There are also many good brands from ...

Re: 5E3 Big (6l6's)
Cheers all...i have decided i'm gonna build me a 5e3 as the parts are abit easier to source here in the uk...i will keep you all updated when i start the build. thanks again Hi If your PT has sufficient heater current, then you can substitute other power tubes into the 5E3 circuit. You will have no...

Re: 6V6 OT Impedance
Thanks for all the information. I am going to try it with the 4200 ohm transformer I have. On a side note: I have this transformer that I had in a 50 watt amp for about 10 years. A few years ago I stripped it down (because, once again, my have to make it more better tweaking turned it into a mess)....

+1 on the commentPaisleyTube wrote:imo: ain't no "right" primary impedances regarding toneshaping gear like guitar-amplifiers
so, as long it ain't too crazy (>100% down or more than 200% or so up) just use what you like.
Best regards,
Steve

Re: Fender DRRI making noise
Thanks man, somebody gave me the chopsticks method. GC gave me 3 brand new pre-Amp tubes, and I purchased a Sovtek and they didn't solve the issue. I started at V1 and just went down the line. Hi, You didn't mention if the amp was purchased brand new or used If used: I usually start at the power am...

Re: Single 1M vs dual 1M bootsrapped master?
They both work well, it depends on the "sound" that you are chasing. The single pot alleviates the tonal change that you would find in the JCM 800 conventional master. The dual pot is an improvement on the single, in fact Kevin O'Connor calls this implementation the "Improved bootstrapped master". ...

Re: First build: AB763
Thanks for all of the great info in this thread. Steve, I will look up Kevin O'Connor's book. It looks like it may be expensive but you have given it a good review! http://www.amazon.com/Ultimate-Tone-Volume-III-Generations/dp/0969860889 I think I'm going with a 5e3 kit from Triode. The Allen kits ...

Re: First build: AB763
My understanding is that to avoid saturation, more iron will be needed in the magnetic circuit as frequency is reduced. In use, I agree that an Allen PT would probably work fine, if slightly hotter, at 50Hz. Hi, Allen supplies a very study array of transformers, from reputation, with high quality s...

Re: First build: AB763
That doesn't happen for me when I try something like Edcor or Hammond (1600). He doesn't ship overseas but I did mention if you have a Stateside buddy... Hi, Agreed on the Edcor and Hammond, both produce OT that are full bandwidth, better suited for Hi-Fi or building an amp with Power Scaling or VV...

Re: First build: AB763
Other than the need for a step down transformer, to handle the higher EU voltage, I don't see a problem. The 50 Hz/60Hz issue doesn't make a bit of difference on power or OT transformers My understanding is that to avoid saturation, more iron will be needed in the magnetic circuit as frequency is r...

Re: First build: AB763
Efficiency numbers are different for different frequencies. Hi Jelle, That is true. But the Beatles UK Vox AC30s didn't seem to sound radically different on the Ed Sullivan Show recordings from the BBC broadcasts. Jimi Hendrix's Marshall's didn't seem to sound different on his various live recordin...

Re: First build: AB763
Hi All, After reading a few posts I have been encouraged enough to have a go at my first amp. My first degree was in electronics, although that was 20 years ago and it's been that long since I built up a circuit. I have no real experience of working with valves or audio grade components, so there w...

Re: First build: AB763
The Allen stuff looks nice but their power transformers only support USA / Canadian line supply (120V 60Hz); there's a specific warning not to use them at 50Hz. So no good for UK / EU etc residents such as Nick. Pete Hi, Other than the need for a step down transformer, to handle the higher EU volta...

Hey Josh, I just finished putting the final touches on a SE build that I designed to have more clean headroom than your standard Tweed Champ/Princeton type The JJ KT77 sounds great - with a very musical sounding full spectrum tone with clarity and a nice growl when pushed. Hi, That's been my experi...

Re: Mallory 150 Series VS. Sprague Orange Drop Caps?
Hai! the OD's and the Mallory's are almost a tie... Man, the Mallory's are nice. Sozo is very muddy and smeary to me. I guess I know what it means when a cap "smears" the sound now, good to know. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q-jsUv3MVtw Hi, Just as a comment, from experience, Sozo caps take a wh...
