You'll need a bigger power transformer to handle the extra 3 Amps of heater current and extra B+ draw. Something like a 450mA 300-0-300V should do and make sure it can handle the heater current.

I'm not so sure about the rest of the details though..

Note that this 80w Express used 300-0-300 450mA PT and 3k3 OT 100w rating.

Express with four EL34's

Post by RJ Guitars »

I got inspired this past year to build an oversized Rocket amp in either a quad of octals or a pair of KT-88's. As I started working through it I realized that the chassis and boards are going to be interchangeable for any of the Wreck inspired builds - Express, Liverpool, or Rocket. The chassis blank is a bit larger than the traditional Wreck box and for the KT-88's I added some breathing room between the output tubes.

I had Edcor wind up some big iron with a 300-0-300 450mA secondary and a 100 watt output tranny to match the quad and another to match the KT-88's. The chassis is drilled to take the Edcors or will also take Fender Twin iron. I haven't ordered any 250-0-250 power transformers for a voltage correct Rocket yet (nothing else is correct at this point anyway), but no reason it can't be done...

One of our Tulsa area TAG builders buit one of the KT-88 prototypes and put together an oversized HV (higher voltage) Rocket that he is testing out. Maybe he will add some details about it but the first report was that the clean tone goes to infinity and then just gets louder.

I am on the road but hoping all the pieces are waiting for me to build up one of these when I get home... probably post Christmas. I don't have a picture of the 4 hole version with me but it is fundamentally identical to the two holer in the attached photo except for the output tube pattern.

rj, I really like the quality of those chassis and I am waiting for the chassis board kits to hit for the posted amp plus the #124 Dumble style.

I plan to use your chassis for other types of builds in the future not just TW or Dumble, they're a good platform.

I took a lot of ideas for my amp from that "Stadium" amp....
Good stuff!

Hmm. KT-88 Rocket as a bass amp? (Maybe not so weird an idea -- the preamp isn't all that different from the Hiwatt CP-103 preamp that Entwistle used.)

Not so different of the Fender Bassman either.

If you look at the schematics, the Rocket preamp is nearly identical to the original Bassman (Marshall wasn't the only amp company looking over Leo's shoulder)... which isn't necessarily the ultimate Bass amp preamp design but with a little higher voltage and some bass friendly tweaks, the dual KT-88 (or quad) idea you might end up with something very Bass friendly.
