That's exactly what I used....
Let me know how it turns out.

I just finished putting a Wreck-style circuit into a Fender Blues Jr. I also used these same value for the hi-cut control, and I can't imagine the amp without them! It would be PIERCINGLY PAINFULLY bright without this, but it is great with this control.
Wife: How many amps do you need?
Me: Just one more...

still tweaking

Post by tsl602000 »

Ok,
I'm still tweaking my express. Right now the pre-amp is pretty much a Komet and I really like that better.
The only thing that's still bugging me is the low end; it's so muddy and wooly with my neck pickup (strat). With clean to slightly dirty sounds it's ok (still not as full sounding as I'd like), but with flat out overdrive it bugs me more and more.
I tried a (fender b/f style 4h) choke, the 5200 taps on my transformer, but still, no improvement.

This amp is pretty much a Ceriatone kit and right now I'm wondering if it might be the the PS caps. I see these 160uF caps on several Express schematics and this one only has two 47uF caps.

So, in general.. what can I do to tighten up the low end?

I finally found the time to install the hi cut and that's a keeper for me.

As you mentionned, I also think the low end could be improved. The amp I built is based on the Kelly 90 schematic but with some tweaks. Most of them can be dialed out to get back to the original circuit.

Have you done some progress changing the low end?

Yeah, That cut control is definately a keeper.
I tried a choke from an old Super Reverb and that tightened up the low end.

Yesterday I decided to change the pre-amp to a Komet. I'm about to kick off that project.
I built a Komet pre-amp into an AB763 circuit and it sounded really good...
