Amazing Looking Trainwreck Style Cabinet - Tempe Guitar Show

Post by RJ Guitars »

I suspect there could be a thread here somewhere spotlighting the fine woodwork associated with Trainwreck clones. This particular sample is amazing enough to inspire a few more looks at some of the Wreck cabinet history.

I needed a cabinet to highlight a premium amp package that I took with me as part of my display at the Tempe Guitar Show. I had been talking back and forth with "Distortion" about doing something special for this event... he suggested a cabinet from Hawaiian Monkey Pod. It came out great and was easily the best looking amp cabinet at the Tempe Guitar Show (my own non-prejudice perspective).

I know there are dozens of you woodworkers out there and I'd love to see some more samples...

Thanks to Mr. Distortion - amazing amp cabinet!

Yeah, nice looking cab alright.
Most people stall out when fixing a mistake that they've made. Why?

RJ, glad the cab made it to you in time for the show.
The cab did turn out very nicely
Here is a picture of the cab just after I finished buffing it..

That's incredible. Was it stained at all or is that just the natural color of the wood with clear coat on top?

Thanks for the complement.
I like to mix and match stain colors. In my experience I like to use an orange stain on darker woods such as Redwood, Bubinga, and so on.
The orange seems to hi lite the figure and make the wood come alive..
Once the cab is stained it then receives 5 or 6 coats of clear lacquer..

Very Nice, The thick coating of lacquer really gives it an excellent shine. I take it was a bit of orange and brown with maybe some yellow in there? I'd love to get a color like that on my next cabinet. (Even if its not made from quite as fancy of a wood :P )

Here is one of my better attempts at finishing some woodwork... I finished this up last week. It's a polymer finish and I'll suggest walnut if you are looking for the wood itself to outshine the wood-worker. (Different photos of the same amp I posted on the Pedal Mule thread).
