Concorde with Switching and VVR

Post by Allynmey »

Hi all, just finished a Concorde clone with VVR and Foot switchable Fast/Grad switch. Sounds great! Dana's VVR is amazing. Some happy friend got the amp last week and gigged it this weekend. He will be making clips soon! :D Here are some pics.

Allyn

fantastic Job as usual!!!!
I took on of jour express clone as a reference of good built amp when I built mine!!!

can you have a good bedroom sound with the VVR?

A question for whom had the possibility to try a Concorde (no one seen in Italy): ok.. the fast is extra extra gain.. but how dos it sound the gradual channel? I heard only the express sound of Glen's record and my clone, the komet payed by knopfler and another one in the fast channel played by the guitarist of a cover band.
I listened to the samples of komet site, but it sounded strange.. very different from the standard komet and the trainwreck.

The Concorde is played for the most part in Gradual mode. The Fast mode is for lead playing only and adds harmonic content. The VVR brings it down to whisper level but, the amp is not made for that. The VVR was to adjust to room size for a gigging musician. That being said, you could whisper over the amp at lowest power. The footswitch makes an almost useless feature usable. The guy is very happy with his amp and has sold his Komet Concorde.

I hope it's ok to ask this:
Are there schematics, layouts for a concorde floating around ?
I know of the layout that Ben made for the Komet,
but haven't seen schematics.
And I don't know if they are very similar or different.

I am madly in love with this tone:

It has probably something to do with the player too.

That's a beaut for sure! You must really have something special going in that amp for your associate to sell his Komet. Congratulations.
I noticed you have a 220uf cap on the power supply board. Is this in parallel with another 220uf? That's some stiff filtering if so.

How did you implement the VVR? The whole amp or just the power tubes?

not at all...Heyboer. The have a line card on them for rhinson. Bob made the line card based on the couple of Concordes that I had on my bench to blueprint.

I've played one of Allyn's amps (pre-VVR) for a 3 month stretch a while back..what killer tones and you'd never know the thing was on if you weren't playing.

The problem (for me) is that this amp is one loud powerful mutha! Too much for my use but that VVR is really something and has me rethinking things.

The amp in gradual mode was like the best plexi with a bigger sack!

LOL Peter Thorn is amazing, not fair to judge an amp when he plays it usually.
He got great tones out of the EVH5150III and I hate that amp with a passion.
