Re: My X10 has begun
Paolo, although I know you're not building a clone, with the dropping Rs used in the x10 and similar circuits like the liverpool, etc. you are definitely starting to stray. With 240V on the PI already, and wanting to go higher, I am very interested in your comments. Here is a spreadsheet showing what my voltages would be in a perfect world, compared to yours. My PI and preamp voltages are quite a bit lower that yours but I could always lower the 22k 3W resistor:

Re: My X10 has begun
Surfsup, fantastic job on the boards and layout! Looking forward to hearing a tone report. A power chord is gonna sound like a bat hitting a wrought-iron fence! Can't wait to see the rest.
Re: My X10 has begun
Hi Surfsup.
I've just finished playing a little with changes in the supply dept. and to tell the truth now i don't have nothing similar to the original situation.
So far I've changed a lot of things transforming the all power supply.
As I've told you I was trying to raise the pi and pre voltage.
I've raised a little also the power tubes voltage and these are the numbers i've got:
B+1:335V
B+2:330V
B+3:313V
B+4:287V
B+5:271V
This have been done by using a 3.9k resistor in place of the 22kohm between b+2 and b+3. Remember I'm using a 10H Choke and No sag resistor after the choke
I also have lowered a lot the resistors in front of the rectifiers and now I have just 47ohm ( yes 47, not 470).
This is tightening a lot the amp character, the bass range control now is much better . Definitely the sound with this higher voltage claims for 25uF cathode caps in the preamp To fatten a little the sound of the amp.
The sound is clear but not piercing.
IMHO I think that I like it a lot and this thing starts to sound similar to the youtube videos ( now i'm testing with a fuchs 2x12 closed back cabinet with 25w greenback).
I can also say that the clean that can be achieved with the 82kohm grid leak resistor is really first class.
When you can open a little the volume, BTW , it's party time.
Nice toy. I've not anything to record it , but it's really a nice amp.
edit: here there are some voltage readings in an ac30

Re: My X10 has begun
Paolo, for B+ rail voltages, I am using a 15H choke rated at 420R, and I have a 22k and a 1k (both 3W) to put before the PI, if I go with the 1k, I get eerily close to the voltages as you:
Me - You:
329 - 335
322 - 330
317 - 313
287 - 287
272 - 271

Re: My X10 has begun
Yep, as I mentioned before, I thought your "perfect world" voltage chart rating at B+3 oddly low.
Re: My X10 has begun
sorry, double post

Re: My X10 has begun
Masco thanks for bringing this to my attention again. As I don't know what current the three tubes will draw (PI, V2, V1), looking at Paolo's chart:
I was using 5mA in my spreadsheet. I'm not sure if we ever verified the 22k between B2 and B3 since I can't seem to see a clear pic of it in any photos. Maybe I'll use the 1k to start with like Paolo.
330-313=17v drop across 3900R which is an I of 4.36mAB+2:330V
B+3:313V
This have been done by using a 3.9k resistor in place of the 22kohm between b+2 and b+3

Re: My X10 has begun
I got everything drilled and mounted properly. She's coming along...did the "headphone trick" to place the OT. That works great!

Very nice! Love the Solens.

That's not fair It's much better looking than mine!

Re: My X10 has begun
So, it's the weekend, you get any time to work on it? I'm looking forward to trying it out once you get it tweaked to your liking.

Yea, I got the PT soldered in, all the pots, the VVR, NTEchip, etc are mounted and the first board is mostly soldered in and mounted. Being mother's day, gonna hang with the wife this afternoon a bit, work on it more late tonight or tomorrow. I'm making progress with the crappy radioshack iron though.
Re: My X10 has begun
Looks good surfsup. Watching with interest! Just thinking that 30W iron should be fine, maybe you just need a bigger tip in it, more heat reserve. I try to use the biggest tip I can get in there without scorching any other parts.
