Rocket/Express twist (=frankenwreck?)

Post by ontariomaximus »

I have built a number of Express amps and a few Rockets. My latest wreck thing takes the Rocket front end and marries it to the Express PI and EL34 output stage, but no negative feedback.

Talk about an interesting amplifier. The only deviation is I put a "body" switch with changes the first coupling cap from about 600pf to .0022uf (there is a .0022 in series with a 680pf and the switch closes over the 680pf leaving only the .0022uf as the coupling cap).

May be the best amp I've heard with single coils.

I've been wondering up that alley for a while. Basically a wreck'ed AC-50. What rectifier setup on yours?

The (original) AC-50 is an interesting one because it actually uses combination bias. Cathode bias for a portion of the bias voltage and fixed bias for the remainder.

Check out RJ Guitar's "Rockster 66" - same idea. He tried it with several octal output combos. I prefer the KT66.

Single coils? You bet. That was Ken F's proclaimed favorite too. I really like the Rockster 66 with P-90s.

I built mine using 6L6 cathode bias into a 212 combo cab.

rjguitar's Pacific tranny set OT is 6k6

The amp is fixed bias and tubes are nicely cookin' @ 42ma. SS power supply, 428VDC B+. Custom Heyboer 4k5 opt transformer (same size as Marshall 50W). Larger PS dropping resistors for the pi/pre sections.
PI has 470R cathode + 18K tail. No negative feedback.
I'll endeavor to get some clips done.
