Well the first thing that come to my mind is that you already have it set-up for Rocket using the GZ34 rectifier now it would be making a new Rocket board and vol, treble, bass and cut controls.

The OT you got from David Allen will work just fine.

I wouldn't go with the EZ81, I think I only mentioned it because people were wanting to convert Marshall type 18w amps to Rocket circuit. So if they didn't want to mess with punching larger hole for octal socket they could just keep the EZ81.

Asside from staying true to origional design, what would be the advantages to going swapping the an EZ81 an GZ34 in the rectifier? Would it make any difference other than sag? I'm getting ready to launch an 18 watt rocket varient myself.

Does anyone have any clips of an 18 watt rocket? I'm wondering how it compares to a 18 watt marshall and a normal Rocket.

Thanks,

Mark,

I wanted to use the EZ81 because the PT I had built DOESN'T have a 5V tap. Just the 6.3V. I'll get another tranny if I have to. I'm just trying to re-use stuff.

What kind of 22uf/450V and 33uf/450V caps are you using in that 2 hole?

I would just use what you have then.

I got those filter caps at CE Distributions or AES for non-dealers.

They are under the axial lead electrolytic section. http://www.tubesandmore.com/

Thanks Mark,
I'll try the EZ81. If it doesn't work out for the Rocket, I can either buy a 5 Volt 3 Amp transformer (I've seen them for around $25) and use it to power a GZ34, or I can turn this chassis into an 18 Watt Lite, and start the Rocket from scratch. I've got most of the parts, either on hand or on their way.

I think......
Deric, you are absolutely correct, my layout is wrong and I am uploading rev. 1 with the correction. When I made the layout I copied the bass pot from another layout and the jumper was copied too and for some reason I missed it and the outside lug ground connection ( which is the defining feature of the Vox tone stack - duh ) for some reason. I was just making up a BOM to order parts for my build finally when I noticed it and remembered your post.

Thanks for pointing out my mistake, I should have paid more attention to your comment at the time.

I am thinking of building this next and wondering about components. I was building a BOM list based on the two schematics posted here but then realized there was a BOM already made LOL. Doh..anyway:

The chassis would prob. be my biggest headache to punch holes. I saw in the BOM there is a chassis link to ampbuilderparts.com but I can't seem to find it there. There are 6 chassis listed all of which are stompbox chassis...so I googled...

Weber has some but the nearest I could find is the 6v30 (nearly the last one listed here https://taweber.powweb.com/store/chassis/chord2.html )
but it doesn't seem right either.

Where do you guys find pre-punched chassis for 5 novals and one octal for a rocket build? I have a feeling I am going to have to start shopping for hole saws...

FWIW, you will probably not notice much difference in performance using an EZ81 vs a GZ34 in a 2 holer. If you go with an octal socket for the recto, then you can try other common rectos to see what suits your tastes.

I decided to start this 2XEL84 Rocket from scratch instead of reworking the AC15 I have. I have some Edcor iron ordered, which will be about a month out.

I'm going to try to squeeze everything into this narrower (6 1/2 inch wide) chassis. Anyone see any problems with a narrower chassis, noise etc.? The OT will end up somewhere over the circuit board. I'll bolt the 120R 25W wire-wound to the back wall.

P.S. After reading the previous post, I may do a Rocket conversion project with the AC15, which has an EZ81, while I wait for the Edcor iron.

That is a nice board and your planning will make for a nice amp.

Totally sweet looking board... I am a fan of that idea! I have used "everything on one board" technology on a couple builds and for a Rocket I know that a 6" chassis worked extremely well for me. I didn't place the output tranny over the board but lots of folks have been doing that for years. I think it will work.

RJ... Where did you put the OT? Traditional Rocket layout? Must be narrow transformers. The Edcor footprints I'm getting are 3X3 (OT) and 3.25X3.5 (PT), so there really isn't room.

I do have a wider chassis (8.5") but I want to use stuff that's been lying around for too long, and this 6.5" chassis is in that pile. I paid for it so I want to make it work. I'm happy that others have had success with these narrower chassis. Gives me confidence to move forward.

This whole amp is scaled way down, but I stayed with the Trainwreck layout to some degree. Edcor really likes to make their transformers beefy so it's hard to get everything in there. I had the luxury of a smaller output tranny so it all fit, but it was a bit tight.
