How much Tru-Oil for a cherry cab?
Hi,
Apologies for non-electronics nature of this query but since its for my Express build I thought I should stick it in here. Hope thats ok.
I'm about to order a cherry cab for my recent build but it seems like I will be getting an unfinished one. I read that Tru-Oil (as used on gunstock) is a good product to use, it dries faster and becomes a harder surface. I am trying to track down a source in Canada I can order from but I also need to decide which side to order. I see it comes in 3 bottle sizes of 3, 8 or 32 fl oz. Which one do you think I will need to finish off a nice cherry cab?
Here's what I'm referring to : http://sport.birchwoodcasey.com/Finishi ... 1b8a3f180e
If you happen to know a source in Canada I would really appreciate it. I don't think I can order this from US as flammables are not possible exports.
Thanks much

The 8 should be enough, but I'd get the 32 anyway. It's less than $20 so it doesnt make sense to get the small one.

John's right - 8 is more than enough.
Handy to have though - more amps means more cabs...

I've done multiple guitar necks, a small 5f1 combo, and the head cab in my avatar with one of the small bottles. However, I bought a 32 oz. on Amazon because it was marginally more expensive for what you get.

3 oz bottle goes a long way!
Remember the secret to a good Tru Oil finish is to apply thin coats.
Otherwise you will have slow drying times and it won't cure properly when done.
For a cab I would recommend 6-8 coats or more.
Buff with 0000 steel wool after the third coat is dry then after every two or so coats.
As selloutrr mentioned, you can wet sand Tru Oil just like lacquer but it has to be very dry and hard to do that.
Good luck!

Thanks. Can't wait to start!
EDIT : Managed to find 2 bottles of 3fl oz locally at Island Outfitters. For info for anyone else up north looking for them.

New question... Do you apply any to the inside of the cab and back side of the faceplate? I'm thinking of applying perhaps 2 or 3 coats to protect. Can't do harm can it?

Always finish both sides of any piece of wood.
It doesn't need as many coats, or to be rubbed out( unless you are like me)
The reason is that as the wood is exposed to changing humidity it will absorb and release moisture at different rates through finished and unfinished surfaces. This can lead to warping and splitting.
