rjguitar Rocket build

Post by M Fowler »

Finished up a build for rjguitar he is traveling a lot this month so haven't heard back from him so I am going to post anyway since he has the new transformers posted on his site www.rjguitars.net

New Edcor PT 290-0-290 with gray end bells.
New Pacific OT 5k with gray end bells.
Hammond 158L choke
33/33uf JJ can cap main filter
40/20/20/20 node filters

Otherwise stock Rocket and sounds great to my ears.

Nice Mark,So really the only diff is the can caps outside the chassis take the place of the stack method inside the chassis .Also the chassis looks like it has a darker finish.Very Very nice build!Mikey

With the filtering mounted outside, it all looks dangerously simple, huh?

I have a question about the darker chassis; why do we paint them?

Nice, Mark!

Very nice Mark,
I like the way the cans clean up the inside. My amp is finished as well. I'll post some pics soon.

Question, did you have the schematic for the OT? Is it orange 4 / brown 8/ yellow 16 ? Just want to make sure I don't damage my new Iron. By the way our voltages seem to be very close, looking at your chart. I am diggiing the Rocket tones a lot. AC30 on steroids.

Thanks guys it was difficult spacing everything but worth it in the end.

This chassis was left over from a 7 pin power tube project. I have another chassis this color from rj as well Dumble style.
Question, did you have the schematic for the OT? Is it orange 4 / brown 8/ yellow 16 ?

EDIT This new Pacific OT is based off a Dynaco OT so the wiring is the same as the Dynaco or Dynaclones.

That looks great!

I like the can-caps topside. Makes for a much cleaner, neater, more robust build. The traditional stack-o-caps always made me nervous.

How is the noise/hum with the shared preamp ground node?

Thanks Nick and Bob.

There is no hum and I have never had a hum issue with shared ground on can caps (high level).

The PI (mid level) is grounded with the can caps but the rest of the board and pots (low level) are grounded with the V1 cathode resistor/bypass cap and input jack.

See in picture 002 how I grounded the pots and board to that front row of turrets with a buss wire and then ran that buss wire in front of the board to the bypass resistor turret then off to chassis ground tab next to the input jack. I don't like soldering to the pots if I don't have to.

Very nice work. The grounding scheme you are talking about is interesting and I'm going to see if I can copy some of it in the build I'm working on now. I have always tried to use the Hoffman buss style wiring across the backs of the pots but it is SUCH a major PITA if you ever have to change anything that I've decided not to do that again.

Any chance of getting some sound clips? There aren't that many clips of rockets out there.
