Express el34 and two 25watt Greenbacks

Post by RockinRocket »

Is this safe to do? I plan on building a express after I feel I have done enough research. The biggest cab I have is 2 greenbacks and am hoping I wont have to buy a pair of creambacks. I would attenuate but like most folks would want to hear how it sounds natural.
Also I am real interested of what typical clones put out for max output? Thanks for the help.

With el34s? Where do you run the volume at and have you ever dimmed it? Thanks

the express is a small amp (6k6 around 400v, almost like a deluxe reverb). the output is less than 50w

Guys,

How about if you can only run a single 12" for the Express? What's a good choice?

Thanks....

I like celestion gold (louder). Some people say a creamback (65 watt) will tame the volume. For the gold I would recommend using 6V6's to be safe.

I run a pair of Heritage 30's with mine. It handles it just fine.

Im aware the amps under 50 watts (clean though, right?) But Ive also read multiple times that the express is louder than 50watt 4 hole marshalls. Why would it have less watts but louder than 4 hole marshalls?

A single speaker with 50-65w power handling will handle an Express all day. Pretty sure they're around 30-33w clean, but no more than 50/55w maxed out.

They're louder than a JTM 45 which is a four hole Marshall, but not louder than a 1987 Marshall 50w amp.

Two 25w G12M's should be fine for an Express, IMO.

Jim,
Thanks for the info.
Also if you're doing a 2 speaker cab any preference in wiring and speaker resistance? Like two 8 ohm in series vs. two 16 ohm in parallel?
Thanks.

I recommend two 16 ohm speakers wired in parallel to 8 ohms.

One final question about 2 12 greenback cab
Open or closed?

Thanks again....

Either open or closed will be fine....Different tone. The speakers will have a little less power handling in an open back cab because orf excursion limits. I think for a margin of safety I'd use G12H30's....I think they sound better too(IMHO).

Thanks for the detailed responses. Very good info. Im interested in why you recommend parallel for 8 ohms. I usually try for 16 ohms because of using all the winding in the transformers. Do I hear a difference? I dont know maybe.
