Express Combo Build
I had to try one, saw Mark's combo build and a few others here on the forum and just had to. Finished up the chassis tonight and powered it up, adjusted the bias and measured voltages. Sounds good so far, i'll have to turn it up a little more tomorrow, and who knows how it will be in a 1x12 cab? So far so good.

Looks nice! Any chance of clips?
Re: Express Combo Build
Looking good, Jeff. Not much worry about excessive wire runs in that tight chassis!
What speaker are you going to use?
Cheers,
Greg

Re: Express Combo Build
Nice job. You might need some EL34 tube holders and o'rings.
I used a Celestion Vintage 30 in my combo.
I'm building another combo.

Re: Express Combo Build
Guys,
Very nice. Are you building your own combo cabs as well?
See, me and wood we don't get along, any places to get pre-made combos that fit the TW chassis?? Also has to be cheap!! LOL...

In theory, theory is the same as practice. In practice it's different.
Re: Express Combo Build
Not cheap but I use either Weber top load chassis 1-12 combo cab or Mojotone 18w Marshall top load 1-12 combo cab.
Mojotone also has the front load chassis 1-12 combo cab I like. All are the same physical size.
Thinking about using an ebay builder's 5E3 tolex or Blues Jr tolex cab. They are much cheaper but still built very well.
I suggest using the smallest chassis you can such as Turretboards.com 20 open channel 18w Marshall style blank chassis. Nice and long but keeps the leads from the board to tube sockets short.
I like the chassis Jeff12 used above ? if that is mojotones 5f6 chassis?

Re: Express Combo Build
If Jeff buys a cabinet I'll ridicule him for days! He has built three very fine head cabs for me, and I suspect he will be draping this chassis in another of his fine works of wood art.

Re: Express Combo Build
I understand, woodwork is way to much of a fine art for me. I expect that if we asked ampmike, amplifiednation, or Distortion (I know there are other good cab guys here on the forum as well), they would build these for us in a finished product.JoeCon wrote:Guys,

I have a guy that does these for me... made exactly to fit any of the common vendors for TW chassis that we use - Allyn's, Ceriatones, and my own. If you like to finish your own the price aint bad... tolex can be ordered in any color...

RJ
Thanks I'll check those out. Working on a Liverpool 2 EL84 that would probably be a nice combo/jammin amp.

Re: Express Combo Build
I have a couple 2 hole LP's here and I gotta say - they are really stinking loud amps. I think that a half pool in a combo would hold it's own as a grab and go amp in any small to mid sized venue. The other thing I like is that you can use half sized iron and the cost and weight both go down substantially. I like these amps so much I have plans to make a series of these including some with 6V6GT output tubes... not quite ready for prime time but could use some eyes if you guys don't mind -- http://rjguitars.net/Sweet_16.htmlJoeCon wrote:...Working on a Liverpool 2 EL84 that would probably be a nice combo/jammin amp.

Re: Express Combo Build
Thanks Greg, Space is limited for sure on this one. I was playing through a Celestion 65 watt Creamback last night that I liked. Waiting on a hemp cone Weber to try also.gktamps wrote:Looking good, Jeff. Not much worry about excessive wire runs in that tight chassis!

Re: Express Combo Build
Tube holders are on order used the last I had on a Tweed build, o'rings maybe a good idea. I was switching between a vintage 30 and the 65 watt Creamback last night and I like the Creamback sound. I'll know more when I can turn it up a little higher, was running through an attenuator, don't think the neighbors would be to happy at 2:00am to hear me try speakers. Can't wait to see your next build, last one you built was what made me want to do this. Chassis is a Mojo generic super aluminum that I alumi welded the corners on.M Fowler wrote:Nice job.
