Post by wsaraceni »

i built a ax84 p1 but didnt like how it turned out. this is my first real amp build. it sounds pretty good and is pretty quiet. gonna get a headshell made for it next.

That's pretty cool for the second build fella. Nice work. What did you call her? I notice you ran the bias pot off over near the power valves.... no noise issues? Why not just put it on the back panel?

i plan to add test points like the komet. seemed like it fit well there. this amp is really really quiet as is. even without the bottom shielded.

That's great. I just noticed a switch on the back panel too, what's that?

I entertained thoughts along those (ie. Test points, Bias pot) lines, but a little further reading (Trainwreck pages etc) led me to believe that this was really a set and forget sort of thing and shouldn't really require continuous adjustment, and having it easily accessible would just lead to trouble. Even if I didn't fiddle with it, someone would.... Studio Techs/Engineers are terrible for that sort of thing.... "now what does this knob do?...."

Just my opinion but I would not want a bias pot on the back of the amp. I want the bias pot to be inaccessible when the back panel is on the cabinet...it's not a knob you want to get bumped or for anyone to turn without knowing what they're doing. I DO like having the bias test points on the back so you don't have to remove the back panel to check it...but definitely not the bias pot.

Nice looking build! Something you might consider would be put some insulation around the bright cap and presence cap leads. You can just strip some insulation off of some wire and then slide it over the lead before you install/solder it. That way you know there is no chance of the lead shorting to the back of a pot or the chassis or whatever. It's certainly not necessary but I think it looks nice, is an extra measure of relibility/caution, and only takes an extra few seconds.

What trannys did you use?

used toneslut trannies. the bias pot is in the top of the chassis. a back panel will cover it. test points will be on the back when i order them.

richie noticed one wiring mistake i made which i have to fix. hopefully thats the only issue. and hopefully it will still be quiet once i fix it.

finally fired it up. seems to have all issues worked out. i think i need to sheild the bottom to make some squeals go away (aluminum foil works for the time being) so my father is building an OAK headshell.
