Trainwreck Liverpool build comes to Life!
I just finished a Liverpool style clone build (non standard transformers) . This amp sounds so amazing with a strat. I think anyone who plays a strat needs to here how amazing their guitar will sound with this amp!!! The high gain tones are amazing, AC/DC here I come!
I installed a Type 3 master vol that I can switch out of the circuit with a pot that has a SPST switch on the back. I used a Vox AC30 style output tranny from Weber and a Twin Reverb power tranny ( I had them in my parts bin). I installed a VVR on a terminal strip that I use to dial in the Plate voltage to 340volts ( red knob).
I used 2 different sets of matched tubes. One set are JJ's and the other set are 7189's . The 7189 tubes have more head room than the JJ's.
Need to finish a head cab now!

Nice work! How do you find the Type 3 master?
Re: Trainwreck Liverpool build comes to Life!
Thank you Colossal.
I really like this Type 3 master volume. I find that it does not really harm the tone at all. I also find that I can get the most amazing overdriven tones at lower volumes when I max the volume and minimize the master. It is so much better than any overdrive pedal!
Cheers

I was making a few changes to my Liverpool clone amp last night. I changed the 2 separate 120 ohm cathode resistors to one 50 ohm cathode resistor for all 4 tubes. In both cases my bypass cap was a stock 220uf.
I noticed the change in sound right away! The best way I could describe it was that my clean tones became sweeter sounding!
In both cases I have lowered my first power supply filter cap from 80uf to 50 uf, all other caps are original spec sizes.
Cheers

That's interesting on the single catthode resistor. I haven't tried that (yet).
You're right about a strat through a Liverpool - match made in heaven.

Separate 120R with a 220u on each one, and a single 50R with a 220R? For sure that will give different results.

Yes , the change I made is exactly as you described it Martin.

I think one cathode resistor generates more 2nd harmonics -- yeah!!!
Re: Trainwreck Liverpool build comes to Life!
I think that may be the case if the cathode resistors were specific to each 'push' / 'pull' side.
But if, as with the Liverpool, each cathode resistor handles a p-p pair, then I think it should work out pretty much the same as if all 4 shared the same resistor.
So the difference (between 2 x 120 and 1 x 50) may just be down to running the tubes even hotter.

I would tend to agree that the tubes are running hotter and you'll sure hear it... I haven't run the numbers but this has to be close to the limit. Having said that I'm not sure it is as hot as Vox ran them?
