MARSHALL 1935 bass cab for express?

Post by andresound »

Hi guru's of the forum😀,
I have been offered this 1972 Marshall 4x12 bass cab. The drivers are original and in good nick. Is this not the "holy grail" for the express? If positive I will purchase! Always been after one of these. Your views please..

Ken's favourite cab was the Ampeg V4, but many use the stock slanted Marshall cab. I've heard the straight cabs are quite resonate sounding. I guess it depends upon what you want to hear?

Thanks Mark. I think there is also a slanted cab mate for this bottom. Should I go for that instead? Although a "resonant" cab IS the point with guitar and not bass?

If you can try it out before hand then do so, if not then it will be a bit of a gamble.

Check out this link, has some good info, particularly from Geetarpicker.

The seller couldn't wait any longer. So I bit the bullet and purchased the straight cab on the left.

How does it sound?

I'm surprised the owner split the cabs up.I'd think the rig would have been worth more together than separately.

The key is that it's a sealed back cab, and uses Celesion Greenback pulsonic cone speakers per Glen Kuykendall. People, typically use a model 1960 cab IIRC. Probably very similar to this cab you bought.

Played her at practice jam last night. Sounds great, however, I think I now need to remove the extra (used a .0015) in parallel with .002 coupling cap. She's now a little "too fat" or thick sounding when using the LP. So.... once AGAIN the Express will go back to being stock standard with the exception of the VVR. No extra coupling caps and no grid stoppers. I think I'm done fiddling. This circuit does NOT need modification. KEN GOT IT RIGHT!!!

What extra grid stoppers did you use?
I have generally thought the grid stoppers were a good thing.
This sort of thing was done with Ingrid, along with a second 0.0022uF cap.

Hi Mark,
The 2nd stage 820 input grid resister I had on since the beginning. Once the amp was settled, I removed it. Also removed the 2nd coupling cap, which is normally a .002. I had a .0014 paralleled with the stock .002, which I removed. After 100's of hours modding, un-modding and tube rolling, I think she is done.
I have also posted before that these amps need at least 200 hrs on them before they "smoothe" out. My amp is VERY different to the first 20hrs of playing.
Thanks to everybody on this forum for all their encouragement

everybody should have a 4x12 cab or 4x10. The sealed cabinet and 4x speakers just produce a sound that's impossible to get from anything else. Sometimes not practical but as a guitar player you owe it to yourself to have/use one at some point in your life.

Enjoy.
