My Rocket Clone Vs Brad Paisley's Rocket

Post by strato17 »

I haven't posted here in a while, but I figured you guys would get a kick out of this. I built my rocket and express clone about 10 years ago with help from AmpGarage, and today, I got to do a shootout with Brad Paisley and his Rocket(named Marcie?). My band is opening for him on this summer tour. He was very impressed with mine, and honestly they were pretty damn close. I do admit though that his Rocket had this special string-to-string clarity that rang like a bell. His '52 tele doesn't hurt, either. Magic! The Liverpool(Hattie May?) was fantastic. He mentioned that this one was built for a blues player, and it was lower gain. It has significantly less gain than my Express clone. He's also shared some cool Ken Fischer stories with me. Pictures attached(the flamed maple one is my rocket clone):

Cool Strato17, that's a great gig to get. The lower gain in the Liverpool amp could be the mod where some of the signal is shunted across the plate resistor and through the power supply.

I also wonder if that Liverpool had 68k for the third stage grid leak, instead of 150k?

The 68K works great in a Liverpool, I'd imagine 150K would be a lot of gain.

Damn, what a great experience and thanks for sharing! Did you find out what EL84s he was using? I would love to know this.

Did you by any chance notice what was loaded in the DR.Z cab, or is it a closed design?

He uses an Alnico Blue and Alnico Gold together in a 2x12, open back, for that particular cab.

That's such a cool experience! Is there a thread here on your build for more info? Any special mods or pretty much the posted schematic?

Actually he uses two DB4's, he runs 4 amps at once. The DB4's are to the left of the Z cab with the wrecks on top. The Z cab with the Bruno on top is in fact a DB4 combo. The Bruno was brought out to compare with the rocket. The DB4 is a fantastic amp.

That's cool... Do you recall what Transformer set you used in your Rocket build?
