6V6 Rocket......why not ?

Post by Doxie man »

I’ve built the standard Rocket a few times. I am curious about building an 18W version but with JJ6V6S glass. I think a Mercury Deluxe Reverb PT and an 8K OT would do nicely. Considering the choke, Have you guys changed or experimented with different models/ specs ? I used the standard Hammond 158L we all know on my 4xEL84 builds but never really experimented . I would think a 6V6 Rocket should sound pretty nice 👍👍

There are several ampbuilders that have had good results along those lines..... TopHat amps had some success in building amps with the Voxish + 6V6 formula...

Back in the 90's when Dr-Z was building amp exclusively with EL84's I asked him if he'd ever consider building an amp with 6V6's his somewhat terse reply was, "NO" It took a few years but he eventually changed his tune :P

There have been a few guys that have built 6V6 Plexi type amp and were very satisfied with the results so there's no reason a 6V6 Rocket shouldn't be a nice sounding amp....

There have been 6v6 Rockets built before on Ampgarage so no reason why it can't be done again.

I have not but have built many with 6L6, KT66, EL34, KT88 and KT120.

My first Rockster started out with a pair of vintage 6V6gt's. It sounded good but went over the top to Sonic perfection when I swapped in a set of KT66's. It was like a great sounding Rocket but with more of everything. It was hard to go back to the 6V6's once I heard the big bottles. FWIW - the front end was the basic Rocket circuit and I also found that the 66's and the Dynaco style (Rocket) OT work together very well.

Way back a long time ago I think it was normster who put together a Rocket with a quad of 6V6's. This was supposed to have been a great sounding amp as well.

Wouldn't the rail voltage have to increase in using KT-66's?
I'd imagine they would want to see 400VDC.
