Rockster reverb finished

Post by Wilco »

Finally my Rockster Reverb is alive!
This took me a loooooong time to finish. For a number of reasons this project stood 95% finished on my workbench for a couple of years. This weekend at last I found the time and motiviation to complete it.
And I must say, I was not disappointed! First of all, it fired up straight away, (almost) no problems whatsoever, and very quiet.
Second, it sounds great, and indeed it works fantastic with pedals.
I built this from a kit I got from RJ a very long time ago.

The only small thing I am not sure about, is the tone stack. The mid-control seems to react “weird”. Makes me wonder if I might have connected it backwards?

I still have some checking to do, but my first impression is that this might actually become my “number one” amp. Very happy camper here, so thanks guys for letting me lurk here and absorb some of your knowledge.

I received a kit from rj about a year ago and it is a great sounding amp I agree. Congrats on finalizing your amp.

Nice work! Wouldn't mind hearing that badboy. Always good to find the "number one" amp. :-)

Popping sound Rockster reverb

Post by Wilco »

Have been working on the amp today.
I figured it was finally time to hook up the reverb tank, and to wire up the mids control the right way.
I did find a problem though, and I hope someone here could put me on the right track:

When I turn up the reverb, a ticking/popping sound appears. It is a very rythmical noise, as if someone is tapping a 32nd note rythm. Turning the reverb down makes it (almost) go away, turning it up makes it louder.
I also hear a loud pop when turning the amp on standby. This pop is also much louder with the reverb level turned up.
These things happen with or without the reverb tank connected.

Could this be a power filtering problem?

A rhythmic ticking is almost certainly coming from outside the amp. Try moving it to another room. Same issue?

My advice for the popping standby switch? Don't use it. Seriously.

The gut photo above must not be the final because there is a reverb wire missing to the output of the PI see my attachment with red circle.

I am having some difficulty understanding what you mean exactly Mark. This is 100% because of my inexperience in amp-building, I am sure of that. Might also be of slight changes I made to RJ’s layout myself (and there could be important mistakes in that).
Would you mind elaborating a little more (on a schematic for example)? What connection exactly is missing? Thanks again for you help.

Maybe there is already but a 220k /22uf cap is supposed to be connected where I have the red circle.

I am not sure I see those on RJ’s layout either?
I am using his ‘Rockster Reverb - Rev 3.5 - Feb 4, 2012’ layout.

It might be there I just don't see the completed circuit based on v3.5

C8 .047 to R35 100k to C22 .005 to R34 100k to B+3

Well if the reverb and amp is working then please disregard my questions.
