It would make sense you should have lower output/volume with the 12AY7's but not less headroom as I would thought you'd have to turn the amp up more to get it to breakup. The other option is to return the first stage to a 12AX7 and use a 12AT7 or 12AU7 as a driver, that will have less drive to the output stage.

How do your ears handle a 100 watt Plexi, my ears wouldn't stand for it (ringing really loud!)
Sorry, I meant a 6.6k primary (as opposed to the 1.75k of a plexi). Plexis are not loud, unless you turn them up. I prefer ear plugs to attenuators

I think the parts are no longer available? Could be one of the reasons there’s less talk.

Huh? Sure, parts are readily available.

Unless you're looking for the exact same parts Ken used, then you're in for a hunt. And a dollar or two.

Yes, I wrote 'the parts', not just parts.

Where would you buy the pilot light for an Express?

What parts are particularly hard to find?

Mallory filter caps have been dispensed with, which leaves the Mallory signal caps. Ken Fischer did use Mallory M150's in the Komet stuff, these would sure be regarded as a replacement for the Mallory Orange Drops especially since the Orange Drops were still around when the Komets were first made.

Have you tried RJ guitars for the pilot light?
He has stock of Trainwreck parts.
Yours Sincerely

Mark Abbott,

Please send me details on this fast vintage switch thing. Love my Express, but it’s a beast,

And as for the pilot light, I have many to sell. And original speaker impedance selector switches.

Ron, if you check out my Express build thread you'll see the info there, I put the switch on my express and did some experimenting with some other resistor values to tame it a bit as well.

edit: found the switch thread.

That's it Marcus, I think that is a better option than replacing the first 12AX7 with a 12AY7 as Ken Fischer did.
