Swapping el34's for 6l6GC's?

Post by Oddvar R »

Hi. I was wondering if the El34's in the Trainwreck could be swapped with 6L6GC's? I am a bit disappointed in the TW when it comes to overdrive, a bit too much Marshall to my liking. Or is there any other parts that could be tested to get the gain going a bit?

Yes you can swap 6L6's in and see what that sounds like. Just reset the bias.

Current production KT77s work well.

I tried swapping a pair of 6l6'gc's in. Didn't change the overall sound of the amp.

I wonder what else could be an essential part of the amps sound. Compared to my 50w and 100w Dumble, the sound is very English.

I have never tried K77, but I will now.

If swap to 6L6 wasn't a notable change for you then going to KT77 likely also prove much the same. The appeal to me is they sit in between with some characteristics of each, plus a bit more headroom. Worth the experiment perhaps.

This is the problem with people assuming EL34 = british sound, 6L6 = american sound. The circuit around the tubes is way more important than the tube type.

Which circuit are you using? They're probably going to always have a bit of a marshall flavor due to the Marshall style 'cold clipper' in the liverpool and express. The express is more Marshally because it basically has a Marshall tonestack and PI along with the cold clipper.
It's true i've lost my marbles and i cant remember where i put them
