ZWreck style preamp/pedal build

Post by Synchu »

Thought it might make more sense to post this here for documentation purposes and should anyone decides to further experiment with it.
These SMPS based tube pedals get addictive, as they are relatively cheap to build and easy and fun to experiment with.

Though for this one, I used a separate 7805 based vero board (lifted ground with two 1N4148 diodes) to supply the two 12AX7 filaments. Found this more stable and less noisy alternative than using the SMPS PCB 7806 which dropped the voltage to 5.5-5.6V under load. In my book, everything below 6V is too low.

So after the tube boost pedal, I did a ZWreck preamp with a few adjustments and tweaks as you'll see. I did experiment with adding the spare triode in few gain stage/buffer configurations after and before the cathode follower - but didn't find it useful or sounding any good to me (though I still left few spare pins should I decide to make this tube tremolo :) )

Very happy with the result. Extremely dynamic and reacts great with the guitar volume. Not so pretty as the most builds here lately, but I had these boards around and they have rather flimsy/oxidized pins that I had to put in use somehow.

The schematic is an export from Micro-cap (so mind the RLOAD and Power supply source and the AC source)

Put couple of sound samples (all guitar tracks in both are a Telecaster with the pedal into my Benson Monarch clone):
Twangy rockabilly style stuff:

Improvisation over Black Pumas / Colors harmony theme pop-rock sort of - kinda aims to demo the dynamics - no change of the preamp or amp controls - its only Tele, single pickup, no change of guitar controls - working the pick and fingers only :)

Very nice, Niki.
Can you post a schemo of the PS section?

Thanks.
Sure - I used the Frog pedals SMPS pcb, excellent quality, btw.
