1N4004

Post by Beerman »

Hey all. I have a stash of 1N4004 diodes.... I know that these are not big ticket items..... I'm no EE..... but checking out the specs I wonder whether these will do for the rectifier....

What say y'all?

They are rated at 400 v @ 1 A.
Where as a 1N007 is 1000v @ 1 A.
So if you are running plates over 400v the 1N004 would be underrated.

The diodes in the rectifier should be rated at least for double the voltage, which you get out rectified. You always have voltage peaks due to the interaction of the transformer's inductivity with the electrolytic's capacity, which would kill underrated diodes immediately.

But you can use the 1N4004 in the bias supply w/o any risk!

Notice that the wrecks use two diodes in series. Theres no reason NOT to use five.

2 x IN4007 = 2 x 1000V = 2000V
5 x IN4004 = 5 x 400V = 2000V

But given these things are 5c each I'd go with some new IN4007's rather than save 20c. Even I'm not that cheap! :D
