She lives...(proto express)

Post by ampkits »

Hi all,

Turned her up just a few minutes ago.

Impressions:

Well, I think the sound has been described here, both thru posts and MP3s. But to note:

1. This thing can feedback your note forever. Man, I cant believe it.

2. Clean sound aint much, not much headroom but as mentioned by others, you can work your guitar for this.
Importantly, tone control setting needed to be tweaked to find the clean I want, but then perhaps I am a bit choosy. My fav clean is the JTM45, the creamy complex tone. The Express is different. The clean you get is very tight/clear type of sound, with a bit of rawness to it.

3. It feedbacks easily. I had the chassis in the open, and was playing real close to it, so this could be the reason.

I'll report more as I get familiar with it.

Notes:

1) Didnt wire up bright switch (dont have the component in hand)

2) Ran out of mallory 0.022 - used poly film/foil.

3) Didnt have 1K 20W - used 10W. Hot!

Pics attached. Not final wiring yet. Will tweak...

Thanks!

Nik

Dear Nik

I agree with the others, that is a nice build.

Is that the final version of the chassis or shall you have the piece of aluminium sealing the internal cavity that Francesca has.

I think I can get someone to make up the round piece of wood to hold up the transformers and stop the chassis from sagging.

I would like to hear more on your take on wiring the amp, and generally tweaking it.
Yours Sincerely

Very nice!!

I see you have a wiring diagram in the background. Can I get a copy of it since I'm schematically challenged? I have about 90% of mine done but I can't seem to finish the very last bit.
