What's your bias set at?

Post by gnugear »

When I first fired up my amp I set the bias knob at noon and it ended up being around 25mA. It was okay, so I tried bumping it up to 40mA and it started to sound really stiff. I'm at 36mA currently and think it sounds pretty good.

Where are you guys running your amps?

30mA here. I'll experiment this week.

Wow, that sounds pretty precise! I'll set mine at 32mA as too!

I used the OT shunt method and set at 33.8mA

I set my bias pot so I'm reading -30VDC on pin 5. Did the shunt method at this setting and was reading 37 and 38 ma on a matched pair of new Winged C EL-34s.
Plate voltage was 396VDC. Sounds very nice (and LOUD)this way.
Hope that helps.

hello there, yep i pretty much bias the couple of 2-el34 amps i have (that run at these plate voltages) in the 38-40ma range. a lot of the plexi guys like to use the 70% dissipation point but i like to run them a bit leaner than that, though usually over 50%. i wonder if the guys (allyn and greg i believe) that spent the time with francesca had time to do a plate current check----i do believe they said that the plate voltage was right on target with moose's power trannie. if not, maybe when they get it back they can do a plate current check to add to the list details. rh

I'm sure its just going to vary from one set to the other, depending on brand or hot or cold rated the tube is. But i think the posts show it can be from 30 to 40ma somewhere in that ballpark.

Bumping this for perspective..
I always just set to 70%.
However, reading into it, it seems there's an audible difference between 50-70%..
I'll need to try again.
