What causes trannies to hum?On one of my Express builds, the PT hums. Not loud but when you turn it on you can hear the trannie humming with volume at zero.I don't get any Humming noise per se when I crank it but something that has been annoying me.I'm anal that way.
Anyways Thanks Steve

The trannies in my express build hum too. So I'd be interested in an answer.

"DC forces the input coil to always sit in one direction and this makes the transformer a little crazy so it hums."
...is "a little crazy" a technical phrase?
Re: Trannie question
Of course, just a fews hits lower on the Google returns gives a different take - and go so far as to say that "DC is rare..."FunkyE9th wrote:Just saw this... http://www.psaudio.com/articles/hum.asp
Bottom line: It is the alternating field acting on the lams to make them vibrate.

"...because they don't know the words"

Can a tranny be potted?

Re: Trannie question
That lamination info was something new for me, thanks for the post. I always figured the hum came for a bad pot job. I suppose if they were more anal they would have posted some sound bites that identified a bad pot job from a bad lamination job? Hello, is that even possible?
Oh well, I learned something new here. And yes, I have had a humming Heyboar PT. Funny thing was, it also got very warm. Reading that article I see that they didn't address this added feature or suggest where the heat came from. It seems crazy to think it came from the moving laminations, doesn't it? Oh well, the PT was replaced and this points out something important - buy from someone you trust because you might have a problem.

Most people stall out when fixing a mistake that they've made. Why?
Re: Trannie question
Yes it was an interesting article.
This too is a Heyboer Trannie and yes from somebody we can all trust.
At this piont i won't be swapping out PT's,the hum is minor.I was just wondering what the causes could be.
After I get my Rocket done however,I may purchase a set of Pacifics to put in this Express.I have 2 Expresses and I would like to hear if thier are any big sonic differences between the 2 after.
Funky, thanks for posting the link to the article
