Huh? who are you talking about?

It was directed at the one who started this thread. Just a little cheesed that someone would piss all over other's work while adding nothing and being a total hypocrite.

Yeah, the cabinet has it going on for sure. Previous owner(s) of this amp had done some mods which didn't work too well. Just got in touch with Allyn regarding some issues to find out a previous owner had swapped the filter caps (hence the hum) with the wrong value, and a poor PPIMV was installed.

Since I've received the amp, the PPIMV got reworked properly, the footswitch mod was installed, Mullard XF2 EL 34's and Bugle Boy preamp tubes were swapped in and now it's getting new filter caps (the filter caps just took a dump and caused a hum) to dial it all back in.

But the cabinet is just ridiculous, huh? The amp will match it shortly!

It works great from about 1/3rd volume up, below that, it's a bit fizzy/trebly, so you have to adjust the tone controls below that. Above that, it roars like a lion.

I use the dual 1mb alpha pot for all of my PPIMV mods. The 250/500k versions lose the ass and the low mid punch and detail, choking the tone. At least that's been my experience.

Jim,
how is the 1meg dual applied? Is it like the Rich mod with a 1meg instead of a 500k or like the metro named Larmar with 250k dual and 2.2meg resistors? Thanks in advance...Steve

Steve, I had Billy Yates install the footswitch mod and retrofit the PPIMV that was already there, so I can't tell you for sure how it was wired up.

As of yesterday, though, I had the PPIMV taken out after Dave Friedman found the bad filter caps w/wrong values, and a bad ground on the speaker jack. He said it sounded twice as good without the PPIMV, although in all honesty, putting in the right filter cap values and fixing the ground had something to do with it as well.

So I'm going to try it this weekend without the PPIMV, and use either a Faustine Phantom or the new Alex's Attenuator with the amp, and see if I think it sounds better without it.

I still thought the amp sounded pretty damned good with the tweaks done by Billy, but if it's as improved as Dave says, then I may be buying an attenuator.

God knows I can use it for my 71 Super Lead I just acquired.

I am looking forward to hearing about your load experiences.

I wish I could get solid opinions on loads that drive rack setups well. Most everyone uses them as simple attenuation. (so if'n you see a power amp laying around... nudge-nudge.. :))

Hurry!

Jim I was curious if you have ever tried the Lar/Mar MV?

The part that seems interesting is the addition of the two 2M2 resistors on the pots.
What they do is drop the overall resistance back to around the 220K of the resistors that are removed for the installation of the MV.

When the MV is dimed it is essentially removed from the circuit.
Tom

Don't let that smoke out!

Gratuitous Koncorde clone pic. Allyn, I've already had two clients call about the amp today. Need to discuss how you want to handle contact info, etc. so email me when you have time.

8) Wow!
Hey Jim,
I would know that cab anywhere. :D
That particular cabinet was built to house the 2nd Clone Allyn built and as you know it was built for Phil (XRAY) from the forums.
I always loved how the Maple turned out.
Glad it ended up in a loving home ..
