Almost ready to fire it up. Only thing left is to wire the turret board into the tubes and pots.

Cool!

Be sure to let us know how much your bro digs it!

I found this, they want $1,300 for this one.

I found one of those for 750.00all beat up. The head style I had, sold for 650 about 4 years ago. I wished I hadn't now. Thanks Mark, it should be running by the weekend.

Brother's Amp

Post by Bob S »

Nice work - he'll love it I'm sure.
From experience ...
Make sure you get it close before he takes it away.
Made my son-in-law a liverpool and let him take it away to "get to know it" before I tweaked on it for his set-up / style. He wont bring it back...

Well, I finished it all up, except for the 4 volts output on the effects send, and saw my opportunity today. My brother came by with his wife (who knew) and kids to bring me birthday cards and I layed it on him. At first he thought I was trying to sell it to him and in his normally jocular manner started nitpicking it. When he stated that if "I" expected him to buy it I would have to fix these things. I set him straight and stopped him dead in his tracks. When he realized that it was a gift he got quiet, almost as if embarassed and then slowly started to warm up to the fact that the amp was his. So the final configuration is vintage Mullards in v1 , v2 , and v4 , and a nos National (12at7) in v3. An old bench set of russian 6bq5's for the power tubes and the thing sounds amazing. I kinda hated to give away the Mullards but Hiwatts just don't sound right without them.I tried every tube I had and they didn't hold a candle to the Mullards. I swapped out a few 12"drivers and they all sounded tinty until I popped off the back and then the bottom end came to life. I cut two 5" ports right under the chassis in the speaker section to port so I could stick the back plate back on and that did the trick. The final driver is a Celestion G12-65 from the early 80's that has a lot of miles on it but it sounds really good (1777 cone). I just talked to my brother and he's in love. He's been playing it all afternoon. I'll get it back and set the effects loop up shortly and he'll be good to go.

Do you have an actual schematic for this Sterling build?

Thanks
