Talk me out of a 100 watt Hiwatt build.......
Ready to start Hiwatt build. Was going to go 100 watt, now I'm not so sure.. 50 or 100.. 100watts just seems to be overkill these days... plus that would mean a new cab and speakers to handle the extra watts..
Where I am at... boards staked need to make up my mind so I can order the transformers...

Well you pretty much have to do 100 or you would be left with extra holes
I've been ruminating over the same thing, but it seems that the DR103 is the definitive Hiwatt - if you are going to do it just do it. OTOH, the answer depends on how you would actually be using it. If you want to play wide open then 50 watt would be the sane thing to do. In my case I'm more interested in the endless big cleans and wouldn't expect to play it at ear-bleed volumes so 100 watts into 2-12s would be fine.

Nice start playonit
Recommend you play a Hiwatt if possible.
Not having experience with Hiwatt I built a 50 watt 504
and was surprised at the volume it has. And the level it takes to even get into crunch tones. Using a 1x12 EV it has a kinda acoustic like flavor.
Extra holes can be covered...or you can always build 2
Mojo iron was recommended to me by some experienced Hiwatt builders. Not trying to talk you out of anything just my 2 cents.
Good luck and hope to see your progress whatever you decide

I built the DR201, it's scary with guitar and wonderful with bass. Couldn't you build the DR103 and pull 2 tubes if you want to downsize ?

I am going with the Heyboer Hiwatt iron... I just wonder if 100 watts is a bit much.. but also agree that the 100 watt might be the definitive Hiwatt tone.. But then again, I am not necessarily out to make a replica... I am interested in any ideas on taming the brightness a bit.. warming things up a bit.

Change the values of the coupling caps after V1 ... I use the stock 22nF for the Normal Channel but 10nF for the Brilliant Channel.playonit wrote:I am going with the Heyboer Hiwatt iron... And you can change values of the cathode bypass cap(s). I changed the 47n for V1,Brilliant Channel to 1uF and added a 25uF for V1, Normal Channel.
Nothing else is changed, I wanted to keep the original tonestack.

Since you want reasons not to, I'd go for 100watts if you really need those extra three decibels. And you wanna use bigger more expensive iron. So, yes, if your bass player just rolled in with another 4x12, an additional head to power 'em and you just can't hear your playing in the mix, slap on a couple more output tubes!

How did it turn out?
Re: Talk me out of a 100 watt Hiwatt build.......
I haven't finished it yet... maybe in the next month or so... Can't wait really.. but I am finishing up a couple of guitar builds and a pedal board for some customers so my stuff takes a back set while that gets finished.. when I do get back at it I will post up some progress pics and updates.. BTW I see you live in my old hometown... Lived in SD area most of my life in Lakeside.. I sure would like some of that warmth right about now...
