ac30 capacitors, which kind, and filter cap values

Post by menger66 »

What caps do you guys like in vox builds I used sozos in my ac4 builds and they sounded great but im not buying anymore sozos as there prices are out of control, I have orange drops, Mallory 150 and Xicon polypropylene on hand, I have enough .018 mustards to replace all the .022 and will try them first to se how they sound, also the hoffman ac30 layout uses 16uf filter caps in the powersupply this seems awful low to me or is this part of the ac30 vibe?

I really don't find much difference when I build various amps and change cap brands or cap types.

Isn't Doug's board designed around Xicon film caps?

I like all 3 cap choices you noted but would use m150's usually for this type of build just because they work well in Vox type circuits.

Hi,

if you mean the output transfomer wiring I would check the DC resistance and take the higher value to be the 16 ohm tap.

The difference is very small.

My digital meter and VTVM agree on 0.2 ohm difference from one to the other. 0.8 to 1 ohm. Fluke 189 and HP410 type.

The transformer I measured is not a MM.

Surely for the money they charge Mercury provide a diagram?

take care...

John
