I've been rekindling the Hiwatt obsession since this weekend, looking at threads and staring at schematics. I see a lot of talk on both the early 70s DR schematics with the CF DC coupling the preamp to the phase inverter and the later 70s style where the triode is just giving a steady bias current to the PI to keep it linear.
Has anyone done listening tests in an otherwise identical amp comparing the two? Strengths/weaknesses of each version?
Given that there is a spare triode stage just sitting there in most of these amps, would it be feasible to combine the two circuits? Worthwhile?
