It didn't smell too nice unfortunately. the smell is only apparent when the PT is hot, of course.

The Classictone transformers are close to the real voltages. If you are going to use Mercury, then ask them about the transformers with lower secondaries. The stock secondary output is 303-0-303 which is a bit bigger than the required 280-0-280.
