DR103 build early 70’s preamp with KT88’s

Post by wpaulvogel »

Here’s some progress. It’s for a former customer. The transformers are Heyboer but I treated them to Partridge appearance. It’s getting Mullard mustard caps and Allen Bradley resistors. Difficult build. I build Marshalls. Here’s how it’s looking.

I used shellac and after stamping and stickers, I shot a little matte clear to seal them in and protect. Here’s the latest picture, I’m waiting on a 2.2k resistor and a 10nF mustard cap. The amp puts out 123 watts clean rms and 238 watts full power. It’s very controlled though when playing and HiFi feeling. It’s gain comes up slowly and conservatively.

Nice work. Is there a reason you used carbon comps?

The customer supplied the carbon composition resistors and the mustard caps except the 47nF that I provided. We did a Marshall Super Bass the same way.

Looks really nice and tight so far! Harry Joyce would say it passes muster. Looking forward to seeing more. Thanks for sharing.
