Peavey ValveKing 412 cabinet

Post by xtian »

In case you were wondering (I was!) about the construction of the ValveKing 412 cab, here are my findings, after picking this up cheeeep on eBay.

All birch-ply construction, 1/2" sides, 3/4" baffle and back panel. Metal handles. Cheap, bendy casters. Four 100w VK 1216 speakers. I wired mine in parallel to make a 4 ohm mono cab.

Sounds good. Slightly crispy top end compares poorly with my #1 cab, but might actually be good in a band mix.

BTW, I dig self-healing silicone tape for bundling the wiring.

Yeah good construction and that is why I have three Peavey 4x12 cabs.

They are cheap to buy and I load them with Celestion speakers usually Vin 30.

But I do have a lot of Sheffield speakers sitting around now.

Too bad 4x12s are so gigantic and heavy. Is there a 2x12 which offers a similar price/quality ratio? (I don't care about the speakers).

My #1 I mentioned is an Avatar 2x12. Mojo, Lopoline, too; these are good builders. Used, empty cabs can be had for cheap.

Me too! Also...the 80s VTM, Butcher style cabs sound great and you can find them cheap too. I put in h30s.

I like how the center post has a socket in the back panel to mate with.

I often wonder about the wisdom of using 1/2 ply for the enclosure.

Seems like it would resonate too much?

Tom,

Mine are older Peavey cabs and they are 3/4 ply.

I like my straight cab the best it looks like it wants to rock out

This cab has three English Vintage 30's and one Chinese Vintage 30. I need to find one more English made speaker.

Did you skin it or did it get to you that way? Is the difference noticeable?

I got the cab this way and wasn't sure if this was a skinned cab or not.

My two other Peavey cabs are black tolex slant 412.
