Not really a good match...A G1265 wants a sealed box, not ported....
Re: G12-65 TL806
They sound pretty good in my Dumble style open back with the oval port.RCGPNY1 wrote:Not really a good match...A G1265 wants a sealed box, not ported....

Yes , that is what I have to start with. I'm going to build another pair of the 806 cabs in the near future and may experiment a bit before I look for a pair of 12 LsRCGPNY1 wrote:Not really a good match...A G1265 wants a sealed box, not ported....

I'd try it - you never know what you will get with your equipment feeding a cab. You may love it, hate it or be bored. Generalizing a subjective experience will limit you.
I built a 2x12 thiele for a Gold and CL80 [all I had] - it sounded OK but bass heavier than I like. Swapped out the CL80 for an M75 Scumback and night and day difference. Sounds magnificent with a blackface/plexi clone and a JTM45 clone.

Yeah, my experience with the vintage G12-65 is that it has a bass signature that is hard for me to live with. I know Robben Ford uses them in a Dumble 2/12 and I've heard this cab live - sounded great - but well, he's Robben and he has a Dumble. He also has a very bright Tele and a super bright Casino. Like was mentioned above, it is all about the combination of things. You may have the right combo.
Man, speakers are hard.

Most people stall out when fixing a mistake that they've made. Why?
Re: G12-65 TL806
Mesa sells...or a least used to sell theirs, either with a 12L or that 90W Celestion thing...both late breakup intended to be clean speakers. I have a G1265 in an open back and it's my go to cab for a number of different heads. While I would be surprised if it's as good as the EV, I'm interested in in how this turns out for the OP. I think of it as having a good deal of character, so it may not do well...it's really hard to guess.

Re: G12-65 TL806
Though TL806 is optimized for EV12L, no reason to not experiment. If you like what you hear, that's what matters.
I don't know if current lit mentions, but back in the 70's when I got a packet of TL cab build directions from EV, they mentioned tuning options by partially blocking the port/vents. If you design this option into your TL builds, you can fine tune the bass response to some extent by adding/removing wood blocks.

down technical blind alleys . . .
Re: G12-65 TL806
Yup, port cover on extends low frequency limit by about 10hz. With an EV 12L it will take it down to 52. Port cover off is how I run mine for guitar - port cover on produces a pretty cool little cab for a 4 string bass....
Throw one in there and tell us what you think. Do you already have the cab?

Re: G12-65 TL806
It is true that covering the port in the EV TL designs lowers the box tuning, but EQ adjustments also have to be made to take full advantage. EV used to sell EQ capsules for specific enclosures that worked great, but were pretty pricey. With my own PA system, I ran the cabs unported, as I could never get the thing dialed in with the step-down tuning.
Re: G12-65 TL806
I dont have the cabs built yet. I'm going to but it may be the summer before it comes to fruition. I was very happy with the last set I built but someone came along who was happier. I will post the project when it happens. Thanks for the responses

I've got a Swamp Thang in mine, sounds awesome to my ears. I sometimes team it up with a G12-65 H in an open back but really the TL806 sounds really good on its own. Just experiment!
Re: G12-65 TL806
The port option on a 806 does not, in itself, extend lows. If you read E.V.'s spec chart what the "step down" mode alows is extension by equalisation. With the port cover on, the suspension of the driver is a little tighter and will allow heavier equalisation without mechanical failure. Also the oval opening on the back of "Dumble" style cabinet is not really a port. It just creates a response close to an open back. It does not "tune" low frequency response, which is what a true port does. BTW an EV 12L is at least 10db down(probably more) at 52 Hz. A more reasonable low frequency
limit would be about 80Hz without EQ.
limit would be about 80Hz without EQ.
Re: G12-65 TL806
I just picked up a TL 806 cab and threw my EVM 12L in it and I'm in love. I'd like to get another 806 in the future for my other 12L speaker. I have 4 of these speakers. Lol....
