Here's "the invisible seam" caught on tape...

This was a vintage ampeg gemini recover and was not an easy tolex!

So cool, thanks! Just about to re-tolex a black speaker cabinet to blonde.

I'm thinking of leaving the black intact on the flat surfaces and removing it from the edges, starting from the beginning of the slope. That way I'll have less work, double-covered sides, and the edges and inside edges will still look sharp.

That's the plan; after a Chuck E Cheese birthday party with 3 year olds, and a recovery (no pun intended) trip to Savannah...

I am like .02 miles from there according to the Google Mapplication.

Make sure you let me know before you come so I can shower.

Blleeggh....save your southern hospitality for the garage!!!

Good luck with your recover...though I would never recommend going over tolex with tolex, I'm curious to see how it comes out.

I went beer over beer today and that worked out OK...for me at least, not so well for everybody else!!!!

You know, once I got the edges of the old black tolex pulled and trimmed, I realized that was the hardest part and peeled off the rest of it. Might have been a beer or 2 involved with that decision...

Sounds like you made a good decision. Heat always works really well when stripping cabs.

Great video. I will find this useful for sure as I take the plunge this weekend with my first attempt at cab covering. Up until now I have just been paying an friend who is an upholsterer a few £££ to do it for me. I love making life more difficult for myself!

Finished this up today. Doing it outside in the sun sure speeds up the process. Whole cab still took me a couple hours/beers. 8)

Thanks again for all the tips Taylor!!!!

So I'm about to embark on my first tolex job. First, thanks Taylor for the video. Any tips on actually cutting the tolex prior to application?

Lefty - I'm still new at this but here's how I did it...

First... I discovered my wife's sewing tools. Who knew? Between her good scissors (don't tell her) and a fancy cutting blade/wheel thing cutting was a breeze.

When starting the first thing I did was square up the end of the piece of tolex I had. I used 3 pieces total: one for the cab, one for the front panel and one for the back panel. The tolex was wide enough to do one wrap around the cab with about 4 inches left over. I figured I wanted about 1.5" of the inside covered so I used a cloth measuring tape wrapped around the bottom to get my width. I believe I ended up at 13.5". Used a straight edge to mark a line on tolex (pencil works great on the inside) and cut it. Before applying it, I marked a center line down the middle of the tolex and the center of the cab so as i wrapped it around I could keep things centered. For the front and back panels I measured out a rectangle, cut it and then centered the panels on the tolex and traced them so that I'd have a guide once the glue was on.

The first cab I did I cut everything big thinking it would be easier to trim the excess. It's been a lot easier since I started cutting everything first.

Hope that helps!
