The Amp Garage

A friend talked me out of my lattice style oak board and I needed another. I had some sapele [sorta mahogany with some figure] laying around and I had the 'Go build something, you fool!' urge so I obeyed.

It's 21x14x3.5". I put the power supply and all guitar / amp cable connections underneath. I like the clean look and the 'I can't kick / step / break plugs and connectors' security.

I used a tea wash and first slurry sand with 320. More sanding tonight with 400 and then oil out.

This is the 5th board to date. The first three were misguided attempts at building a compact and lightweight boards. Those failed as I couldn't arraign the pedals that kept appearing to fit. That's right they just kept showing up! Magic I guess.

The other problem was they weighed more than the lattice style builds. Also - have you seen the size of pedals recently? What are the designers thinking?!? What are they feeding them?

The last one was 20x14 and it worked well but I had issues with crowding. The new one is the pedal board version of punching another hole in my belt to ease the strain.

If anyone even mentions P.A. [Pedalholics Anonymous] I'll be forced to unleash my 'Punch your nose through the screen' emoticon to chastise the judgmental ones.

Beautiful work Russ. I wouldn't want to get a booted foot near that thing. It looks like fine heirloom furniture.

How are the pedals secured to the board...velcro?

But, as mentioned above , how are you attaching pedals? You can't put Velcro on that!!

Initially I plan to use flexible banding around the plugs. The long term is to figure out a non invasive attachment for a threaded rod to attach to the bottom of the pedal and thread though a cross piece underneath the slats. This would allow for easy positioning and swaps.

Alternatively I could do the brute force technique and drill and tap the bottom of the pedals and use a screw/threaded rod though a cross piece underneath the slats.

Every time I mention this method the pedal police wail about desecration and devaluation of something that is a tool. Much like the 'no velcro has ever been on this pedal' sales pitch.

Finished - for now. Had a hiatus when I dropped the damned thing and broke the front corners off. Titebond to the rescue.

Box wired up

I tapped a .5" x 1.5" brass plate [8-32] attached to the bottom of the pedals with double sided tape and then a 1" washer / lock washer / nut


The power supply is zipped in for now - I used wood wedges to hold the last one in place.


Sadly I only had enough brass for 6 pedals - note to self: If you think it will work buy at least two!


Off to the hardware store for more brass.

I have a RAT 2 inbound and am trying to talk myself in to a Strymon DIG. Maybe if I'm a good boy Santa will bring me one. DISCLAIMER - I set the good boy bar very low.
