JCM800 10" Speaker

Post by Littlewyan »

Has anyone ever ran a JCM800 through 10" Speakers? If so what did you use?

My JCM800 is in a 10" Combo cab so it has to have 10" speakers. Got a Celestion G10 Vintage in there at the moment but its too harsh in the mids. The amp sounds amazing through my 2x12 Heritage G12M cab.

I converted a bandmates' JCM800 model 4010 (50W MV w/ one 12" Celestion) to a 1x10, and we tried 5 or 6 different 10" speakers.

We ended up choosing the Eminence Ramrod, but I really liked the lower-priced and lighter Jensen Mod 10.

The result didn't really meet my friend's goal, which was lighter weight and lower volume, and he ended up getting a Marshall PowerBrake attenuator.

Two Greenback tens? Or I was going to mention the Ramrods too as they are supposedly a hard rocking Brit style 10". The Greenbacks are 30W/@ which should be ok, and 95db which is a plus in my book, but the Ramrods are 75W so you can wail easier, and cheaper. Read that Matchless somewhere said the Greenback tens were their fave 10s. I've tried neither however. I have a love hate w/ 10s. Love old vintage amps w/ 10s especially Fenders, hate buying new tens, never really thrilled, 12s don't weight much more, cost as much, and are more useful over all. If you do the greenback or ramrods report back, I'm curious.

Ah yes the Ramrod, I did look at that. Would you say it sounds similar to a Greenback?

My JCM800 has a 6V6 Power section that only puts out roughly 10W. Still bloody loud though!!!

Don't worry RP I will keep this thread updated.

Oh don't throw another speaker into the mix :P. Especially the most expensive G10! That would be awesome but if my budget stretched that far I would probably just buy a new cabinet to be honest.

I played the amp again tonight, it doesn't sound horrible but it seems like the G10 Vintage is all low mids. I like the upper mids of a Greenback.

Tone Tubby Reds. IMHO 1 of if not the best 10 available today.

The Fane AXA10 was also a killer 10, but they stopped making them.
