Iris combo cab

So I built this for the 2017 Dallas Guitar show as a booth amp 5/5-7/17. 1987 in a curly maple, canary and walnut finished with an orange water based stain and linseed oil / mineral spirits.

I plan to build a curly maple iris similar to the pic below. Surprising how much orange the blue human iris has.

Found some curly maple with good figure that was wide enough to form the iris to fill the combo cab baffle.

Then cut most of it away to fit. Always a nervous moment as I tend to be a 'Ready, Fire, Aim' guy.

To put the orange in I carved the 'figure' in with a dremel then bleached the wood with a two part solution. Stained the wood with yellow and orange then filled it with epoxy. Sand flat.

Bleached again then rubbed in blue fabric dye, to be shown in the next post.

Thank you for the kind replies - that adobe thing is giving me ideas....

Here's the iris rebleached and the blue dye rubbed in. It's matte at this point

Now with 3+ coats of automotive clear brushed on

And wet sanded with 400 grit to level and give the paint a grip.

Now I gotta relearn how to use a two stage airbrush.

Your idea would look nice as an acoustic guitar top, pupil as soundhole.

Getting closer to the finish line. I airbrushed in white highlights and some translucent orange on.

I liked the effects but I wasn't happy with the presentation - it didn't said EYE. More black hole on acid. After consulting with a artist friend I sprayed on some white accents.

AYE! - sorry couldn't resist. Three coats of automotive clear later...

I sprayed white on the pupil as a reflection but it was in the wrong place so I plan to redo it.

Now, obviously, you need TWO of them, side by side.

I intended to do just that by book matching the angled pieces. When I cut a couple apart the pieces warped badly - so it will be a cyclops amp.

Fixed the FUBAR'd reflection on the pupil and sprayed a bit of lacquer to make it somewhat shiny.

Next will be to clean the disaster I call a shop and contemplate the next project as I don't do postpartum project depression well. Then I saw this and thought HOLY CRAP! A 2x12!

That looks like a 2x12 AND 2x15 all rolled up into one!
