Re: Favourite 12" speakers?
I dig the Celestion V-Type, Greenback and G12H depending on the amp. Also really like the Weber Silver Bell and Blue Dog.
Re: Favourite 12" speakers?
Eminence Swamp thing. Sounds great in a variety of cabs.
My favorite DIY cab for this amp is the AX84 ported 1x12 cab - AX84 has a great discussion about speakers and the design of this cab - definitely worth checking out
Here's a pic of my favorite cab - I built this one from the AX84 plans with a 3" port and no handles, feet etc, to be used just for recording.
I've tried at least 10 different speakers in this - I love the Greenback/VH30 style speakers as well as the WGS V30 style, but the Swamp Thang handles a lot more wattage, and is slightly better sounding to my ears.
(Don't ask me for magical tone words describing the sound or I'll just get silly

Nice pic, the amp on top has the smallest output transformer I've ever seen. What does the front of the cab look like?
Does the cab sound like a 4 X 12" cab as I've read online?

Re: Favourite 12" speakers?
Pretty simple - I always use 1x12 "select pine" from Lowe's for the sides/ends, and 1X2 cleats all the way around, so all you need is cross-cuts to build.
A finished cab would have rounded edges using my little router table, and fully tolexed, but this is only AX84 cab I have right now.
As far as sounding like a 4x12, I've never compared side-by-side, but Alex, who designed this cab, is a true-to-life genius, who helped me with numerous sticky problems over the years, so I trust his judgement.
That amp is an AX84 Firefly - cool little amp!

Anyone has tried an Electro voice SRO coffee can with a D-type amp?

How about two 12" favorites, but in the same cabinet?
A Eminence Rad fang and a Cannabis Rex.

I've been using the WGS Veteran 30 in my two avatar 2 x 12's; one cabinet has a Veteran 30 and a WGS Green Beret which is their 25 watt green back clone. The other has a Veteran 30 and a WGS Invader 50 for higher powered amps. Their speakers have been really, really consistent from the examples I've seen.
I've also used their "British Lead" (Classic Lead 80 clone) in my Deluxe Reverb and that speaker is excellent as well. Weber's Blue Dog and Celestion's Lynchback are also honorable mentions for single 12's.

Re: Favourite 12" speakers?
I have had many favorites over the yrs, and of course, depending on what it was used in.
Today I'd have to say that my 12" FANE A60 has blown me away in anything I've tried w/ it.
Kinda pricy, but every time I hear it I know a few more $$ was worth it.

Re: Favourite 12" speakers?
I think Guitarplayer magazine gave the A60 a good rap too, they were reviewing the F70 ceramic speaker too, I had considered using the F70 in my vintage Bassman 2X 12" cab.

All my cabs are loaded with vintage G12M or G12H either together or in pattern.
I'd like to give a try to A60 mixed with F70 in a 4x12.
What do you think of this idea ?

I think that would probably sound awesome.I hear detail in that A60 I never did before in my cab.I'd like to give a try to A60 mixed with F70 in a 4x12.

I'm not good with the cork sniffer lingo, but trust me it's an exceptional speaker.

They got a good write up from Guitarplayer. Finding them can be hard though.
