Eminence /Pete Anderson Hempdog 12

Post by stephenl »

Has anyone tried this speaker? Opinions? Looks like Eminence offers a few different takes on the EVM12 - Wheelhouse, Josh Smith...
It's basically an EVM12 with a hemp cone - apparently this darkens the top end slightly.
I was thinking about pairing it up with one of my amps that is on the bright side.

I love my Wheelhouse 150 with every amp. Great speaker.

I love the Josh Smith Sig. in every amp I've tried it in, although I'm not sure if it was EVM12 inspired. Might be though.

I use the Pete Anderson Hemp Dog in a 112 cab under my work bench for testing all my amps.
It's a great speaker but not for all amps.

Hi Mark,
What type of amps did you find that it worked/didn't work well with?

Mostly the EL84 Vox, TW Rocket types, and smaller 6v6 amps, the 50w EL34 high gain amps pushed it hard and we didn't like how it sounded compared to a Vintage 30.

I think it works well with blackface circuits

FWIW I've been a fan of Eminence Texas Heat for some years now. I've used them in several applications and they always come up sounding great. Even in Twin Reverbs, also for bass in 2x12 or 4x12 configurations. 150W rated power. Available from several sources for about $95*. I call it the "poor man's EV."Granted TH does not sport a 300W power rating like an EVM 12L. But most folks don't really need all that power handling anyway. Also, I haven't yet seen one burn out. Of course, YMMV.

*When speaker shopping don't forget some dealers ship at no extra charge, whilst others offer what looks like a bargain price then add a significant shipping charge. Either way, expect to pay about $95 each. 10-15 years ago, sure they were a good chunk cheaper, but that's all gone now. No matter, I still think they're a good value.

I ended up buying the Hemp Dog. I just have it mounted in a spare open back 1x12 cab right now.

It's paired up with a two channel amp - Fender Clean / JCM800 Lead w/ PP KT66 PA. Sounds great to me so far on both channels.

I'm considering building an EV TL806 type cab - Are their any big advantages to this design over just a standard 1/3 open back cabinet?
