Yeah, Bart, that's pretty sweet looking
Db level
Hey all,
I'm moderately knowledgeable about electronics, I feel like I could accomplish this. Just wondering how many db this could attenuate sound? For example the Dr. Z airbrake can only do -11db while the Weber MiniMass can do -50db reduction.
I suppose the better question would be, where does that limitation come from? What would have to be modified to increase the amount the device can attenuate?
Thanks so much.

attenuator footswitch?
Does anybody have a layout to add a bypass footswitch to the Airbrake III? I have searched through a few threads but nothing.
Re: Airbrake Files
Just to clairfy....no, the information you (iamjared) supplied is incorrect!! - http://www.drzamps.com/Documents/Manuals/Airbrake.pdf
Actually, with these values, the Z Brake attenuates the following...
-1.8dB per step 1-4 (0 is bypass) or up to -7.2dB (4 x -1.8 dB)
In the 5th of "bedroom" position, it will adjust between -7.2dB and -30dB!!! NOT -11dB (as suggested)!
...now we all know!

So which layout is correct out of these. The one labeled 195_198 0r the one labeled c502?

Re: Airbrake Files
Really depends on the parts you buy as the numbering system are different for each sector of the switch.
After you get your parts you then compare and match to correct layout.
Heck there must be 10 layouts floating around by now.

Re: Airbrake Files
Ok but there a couple comments of some being incorrect. Just want to keep the smoke inside.
Re: Airbrake Files
In the airbrake iii is there any particular reason why a 8 ohm 20watt resistor was used to provide the shunt value of 21 ohms (8 + 13 ohms in series) rather than just another adjustable lug on the main shunt resistor? I can't see the point of the 8ohm rather than just getting an extra adjustable lug...
Also if you look at the maths for the airbrake iii when using a 4 ohm speaker you get these impedances;
1) 4ohms (bypass)
2) 3.44 ohms
3) 5.793 ohms
4) 6.5 ohms
5) 8.3 ohms
6) 8.976 ohms
So as you can see, for the first three clicks of the switch you're best using the 4 ohm tap from your amp, for the last three clicks it's best to use the 8 ohm tap.
With a 16 ohm cab the values range from 8.55 ohms to 10.244 ohms, so you're best going with the 8 ohms tap on your amp all the way down (apart from bypass of course).

Re: Airbrake Files
Thanks for all of the great info here. I plan on building this thing. However, I'd like a smaller version similar to the Brake Lite. Can I build this exact layout but use two 50w 250 ohm resistors?
Perhaps just two of these in place of the 100w resistors:

Real vs clone
On a real Airbrake you don't have to worry about impedance. At least that's how they advertise it. The unit matches it for you. Is that the case with this build or do you have to adjust the impedance on the amp?

Re: Airbrake Files
Also, the schematic says "50 watts in". Does that mean this only handles 50 watts max? The airbrake is suppose to handle up to 100 watts. [/url]

Will this work for a100 w amp that has 4 ohm out?
