Dlite rebuild

Post by dcribbs1412 »

Rebuilt my D'lite this weekend
this was my first amp build
original build was back in 08...my wiring and soldering was terrible...
( heater wiring... )and whats up with the pastel colored wire...
no good tones from those colors...

It's not great but much better than original...I have learned a lot from
this forum.

pretty much 102 specs added a LFNB switch and Bassman OT
sounds decent...will try a few tubes and move on.

Darin I did the same thing a while back.

I have learned a lot here from this forum and the regular contributors.

A funny thing I read a few days ago on TGP, one of the guys there was talking about some weird amp a guy posted and said, send it over to the Amp Garage.
They will reverse it, draw a schematic and build a prototype by 5pm.

Thanks guys
I think I just spit beer thru my nose.....
sorry Deric...its funny how looking back at certain things at the time were serious and later is sometimes hilarious...anybody else gotten perms and spandex in the 80's and 90's...lots of fun but kinda embarrassing to my kids

I don't visit to TGP too often...I probably should start...broaden my horizons as it were...

There were a few changes I didn't list,relays.trimmers..added a few eyelets changed a few resistors...I think the rewiring really made it feel better...
I'm probably going to go thru my other earlier builds and check them out
see if I can do it better the second time around

I feel the same about what I've learned here. I've been going back lately and messing with some of my earlier builds , rewiring things and such. (things I've learned here), I'm ending up with a bunch of different type amps that really sound good.
by the way I just got a suhr mini mix II and now I know why Dogears recommends it.

Nice job Darin.

What do you feel the Mini Mix II brings to the table.

I hear people say the Dumbleator doesn't allow a dry signal through it (serial) so with a effect in the chain it becomes a dry digital signal through the AD converters and back to the power amp.

I don't really hear anything wrong in that regards, but my ears are 54.5 years old.

For the most part my signal is only going through my TC Electronics G Sharp for a bit of reverb and delay to warm up the tone.
I have that set in parallel, so I'm not sure if that helps or not but it sounds better in parallel.
My D'lator is still a series loop.

I guess I am resisting the MM II because I don't have $250 to spare..... :?

Maybe I'll try to build one from Bluesfendermanblues (Claus) diagrams. :D

Tom, I was using the dumbleator into a lexicon mpx 110. now with the mini mix in the chain it's obvious how much the lexicon was sucking the tone.
Also, I added a non buffered effects loop to my Marshall 1986 plexi bass amp clone. With the d'lator, mini mix and mpx 110 I can add in reverb, The mini mix really made this combination sound outstanding.

Thanks CHIP
going back to old builds is kinda like finding a old amp in a closet that needs a little work to sound good.

the MM II sounds interesting,...I'm with Tom....250.00 is
money spent on other things right now...(new iron or speakers  )
I've looked at the thread with the diagram and may try something similar

I know what you guys are saying about the $250 price tag, but I picked up the mpx 110 off craigs list locally for $40. I decided I'd take a chance with the mini mix, and it worked out great.

Hi Chip,
Can you describe what you hear that is different from just having your MPX110 plugged into your Dumbleator?

I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around what this actually does?
Is it mainly just leaving a dry signal that bypasses the loop and is then mixed with the effect?

What do you hear that are the sonic benefits?

I honestly don't hear bad stuff from my G Sharp and the D'lator.
But, I am also not cranking the amp up too loud since my amp is in a smallish room.

Thanks a lot!

Tom

It could be the difference between the quality of then DAC's. The MPX110 is not the greatest processor. The G-Sharp isn't top of the line either, but for some reason TC knows how to do guitar processors. I've owned a G-Force and now a a 2290 and while these are on another level. I also owned lesser processors. The sampling rate and converters make a very noticable difference.

BTW dcribbs, the amp rewire and cleanup looks great. I didn't think the pastel was so bad.

Yeah, I was sort of looking for the 2290 when I stumbled onto the G Sharp.
It was such a good deal I couldn't pass it up.
It works good enough for me until I am flush again. :D

Yeah, they are still very pricey. The only reason I have the 2290 is because I bought it about 10 years ago, when my work was steady. I have cycled through most every piece of equipment I owned since then. (selling most of it) But, for some reason could never part with it. Having said that, I don't know if I would replace it now even if I could. There's many newer processors that I would consider first.
