This is a really simple and effective way to find the outer foil of your caps.

Sometimes the difference is subtle, so I prefer using a DMM or scope to get a quantitative measurement.

That is true Martin. But worth a try before buying a scope.

If my memory serves me correctly, most of the preamp signal flow caps were relatively easy to identify, particularly the PS caps. I found NTE's a little trickier.
