Screen resistors 470 ohms or 1K: What do you Prefer?

Post by tictac »

470 ohm 70's amp spec. 1K more protection. I've built an ODS and I'm using 470 ohm screen resistors. Lost a NOS GE the other day when breaking in the amp. Haven't even cranked it yet. (the power amp that is)

Thought maybe a 1K would be a better choice for a bit more protection.

I've got 470V on the plates and I have the tubes individually biased at 32ma each. I think I'm somewhere around 70% plate dissapation.

I'm not sure I can hear the difference. If you feel better with 1K go for it. I have 1K in my 6V6 amp and 470 in my 6L6 amp. I've tried both screen resistors and couldn't hear the difference, the resistors in there now are just what was in there last during my testing.

I use 470, 5W sand filled and am biasing a pair of JJ6L6s at approx. 75% full dissipation ~ (34mA). Still no problems so far, about 8 gigs total.
