Using 1979 Dumble ODS 50 2x12 Mesa Cab V30's on new album

The electric playing on Pursuit of Radical Rhapsody is characterized by restraint and gracefulness, as well as by awesome tone. How did you get such great sounds?

I played my PRS—the signature model Prism, which is a double-cutaway solidbody with two humbuckers and a very warm sound. But the secret weapon was a Dumble amp I borrowed in the studio. I discovered that the beauty of a Dumble is in the smoothness of its sustain, and I could see right away why they’re so coveted and expensive. Most other amps might sound smooth in the booth when you’re recording, but on the other side of the glass, in the control room, you’ll hear all these jagged edges on the sustain. That Dumble was like cream, like butter—a small amp with such a great sound.

Found this while surfin the net:

Jeff Pevar w/ Jazz is Dead:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3SrLJ5Ywmhs

And a passage discussing the Dumble:

TG:
How about that Dumble Overdrive Special I saw you with the other night? That thing sounded amazing-

Jeff Pevar: Well, while we were recording the CPR record at "Groovemasters," Jackson Browne's studio, Jackson was incredibly gracious to me. He said "Listen Jeff, I've got a lot of gear here, so let me know if you need anything." I said, "Well, Crosby brought along some Boogies and a Fender Vibrosonic, so I think I'm pretty much all set....hmmmm.....but actually.... there IS one ampthat I've always wanted to check out! ... Ever heard of a DUMBLE??!! Jackson smiled and brought me to a secured area and pointed to an amp on a rack of stuff. "Why don't you check THAT ONE out" he said. I was so excited. It was a Dumble Overdrive Special, which I ended up using on the CPR record for a number of solos.

Greg, for this kind of tone I can recommend a combination of this http://www.renaissanceguitars.com/model-t.php or this http://www.renaissanceguitars.com/model ... hogany.php with such an ODS.

BTW: IMO a Turner Model 1 in combination with an ODS can deliver an incredible broad range of tones.

Cheers,

Max isn't the Turner Model 1 the same guitar Lindsey Buckingham also used to achieve his great tone? Thanks for posts here

Yes, AFAIK LB plays a Model 1 since '79. I think a Turner Model 1 is a great instrument in regard to craftsmanship, tone and versatility, and not only if you're a fingerpicker like LB. And I personally really like the resulting tone of a Model 1 plugged into a Dumble amp. And I like this nice (IMO) booklet "Making The Turner Guitar": http://www.renaissanceguitars.com/pdf/M ... Turner.pdf

Here's a long and (IMO) very interesting interwiev with Rick Turner: http://www.renaissanceguitars.com/rick- ... erview.php

I admit: I'm a Turner Model 1 fan :D

A nice weekend to all here!

Dumbles and cheap and/or funky guitars

Post by ER »

Cool stuff,
Love this guitar;
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xuDDrtydE2Y
I hate to say it but dumbles sound best with funky low budget guitars...even if you have a nice strat you gotta put cheap pickups on it, just ask Steve Kimock, David Lindley, Lowell George, Ry Cooder, etc. (even SRV had a lipstick strat).

Jazz switch engage;
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nKqDQazg ... ature=plcp
Larry N who posts here sometimes put those daneletro P/Us in that strat, he also did Kimock's strat with dual fender humbuckers.

Lots of cool KVHW stuff up on u-tube, can't ever tell what Terry Haggerty is playing through though, Kimock was mostly Dumble during this period, though some two rock prototypes pop in now and then.

So you're being inducted into the Rock and Roll hall of fame, you have lots of nice instruments to choose from, what do you grab? Not sure the amp here, maybe glasman knows, heck I don't even know what kind of guitar that is (looks like an Eko and a Harmony had a baby) but it sure ain't a '59 les paul;

Any favorite cheap guitars or funky pickup fans out there?

Stevie Ray Vaughan:

"For a long time...I just used two Vibroverbs...to run the Leslie...and a Dumble [Steel String Singer 150W] with one [Dumble 4 x 12" EVM-12L] cabinet."
